Pretty in.... Pink? Ch. 1 Deepest Pit of Hell

“Daria, I’ve got exiting news.” Helen announced in that voice that generally told her eldest daughter that she would not find the news so much exiting as horrific.
“Hmmm?” She mumbled in response not bothering to put The Metamorphosis down.
“I decided that it’s not right for you to mope around the house all winter break like this just because Jane’s parents took her to that art exhibition in France.”
“Should I go somewhere else to mope?” Daria replied flatly with a touch of resentment at Jane’s parents for appearing just long enough to abduct her partner in crime to go stare at the Mona Lisa for two weeks.
“Daria...” Helen sighed in apparent exasperation. “So as I was saying I’ve signed you up to volunteer as a candy striper at Lawndale General over the vacation.”
Daria stared at her mother in disbelief. “You what?!”

************
Daria stood in the hallway leading to the hospital cafeteria wearing the uniform. Wearing the pink striped uniform with the slightly pouffy skirt and white panty hoes. She was glad of the lack of mirrors but could see many of her fellow volunteers were not.
“Like how does the uniform suit me, you guys?” Sandi inquired.
“Cute.” Chirped Stacy with her usual desire to please.
“Too bad Quinn has that waitress job. She’s missing out on the joy of helping others.”
“Too bad.” Tiffany drawled.
“I’ve been sucked into the deepest pit of hell.” Thought Daria.
(fade-out- after some time has past).
A bell from one of the rooms sounded. Sandi scowled at it. “Who’s going?” The other fashion club girls looked at their feet.
“Yup... helping others.” Daria mused.
Sandi spotted her. “Hey, Quinn’s cousin or... whatever.
Daria sighed. It was too late to exit unseen. “What?”
“Like, the patient in room 144 is ringing again.”
“The second time today.” Stacy agreed.
“And we can’t remember who went last so...” Tiffany explained.
“I can sense where this is going. You want me to go until you can sort this out among yourselves?”
“Exactly.” Sandi replied.
“Hmmm so the choice here is either risk a lethal infection from one of the inmates or stay down here talking to you... hmmmm.... ok. I’ll go.” She left 3/4ths of the Fashion Club with their mouth’s slightly open trying to figure out if they’d been insulted or not.
