He sighed as he looked down at his lyrics.  He closed his eyes and wondered why things had gone from so good when he was in high school to this point.

Trent grinned, remembering how the band had gotten together in the first place.  He, Jessie, and Max had had the idea of becoming a band before their freshmen year of high school.  They had used the unused music room seeing the budget couldn't afford a music teacher.

Then one day, they came into their make shift practice room to see a bass player wailing away on his guitar.  Trent had been impressed and wondered why he hadn't seen the junior year student before.

His name was Daric Lynn and had transferred from Fielding.  Of course, he'd later them that he had been forced out because the other students and faculty couldn't stand him.

The sound they produced was powerful, but was structured.  Daric new more about how music should sound and Trent tried to learn from him as much as he could.

A month later, Daric met the smallest keyboard player that Trent had ever seen.  Angel Blackstar, the most gothic of the students that went to LHS.  She had a reason for being so bitter to the world.

First, she had been born pre-mature, that was why she never got any taller than 4'9".  Second, her mother had a drug habit and used while she was pregnant with Angel.

Daric had seen her in their practicing room, lugging around a keyboard that she shouldn't be able to carry by herself.  she had refused his help, but Daric was insistent on helping her.

That had started those two's relationship, even though it was rocky between them.  angel had shut out the world and had been content to keep it like that.  However, when he had convinced to start practicing with them.  She had hated the idea at first, but by the end of their first practice together, she was slowing warming up to the idea.

For two years they had played together, getting gigs at places they were too young to drink at.  Unfortunately, Daric and Angel graduated and had to go to college and the band fell into the current sound.

Trent shook himself out of his thoughts and picked up the quacking phone.

"Hello."

"Trent?"

He almost dropped the phone, hearing the voice that was on the other end.

"Daric?"

"You still need me?"

Trent could hear Angel singing some Within Temptation song in the background.

"We need both of you.  We've got a gig tomorrow, but I doubt..."

"I'm only an hour away."

"I'll get Jess and Max here and we'll practice," Trent said, grinning like a fool.

Daria sat beside Angel, watching Daric, Trent, and Jessie playing as Max drove the van.  The girl was giving off darker vibes than Andrea ever could.

"Why are you on this gig trip?"

"Seeing Jane," Daria answered.

"Why is she not in Lawndale."

"Long story."

"We have the time."

Daria sighed, not wanting to get into a fight wither her and launched into the story.

"Are you that stupid or do you not understand males at all?"

"I'd like to think the latter."

"They are simple creatures.  You may think that the upper head is the brain, but the lower head is the one in charge.  Once you know that, you can control them."

"Uh..."

"Love is control...that's something else you should remember.  And, with the way you got with him, you'll never be able to get with another guy the right way."

Daria looked down at her lap, the sharp knife of truth cutting into her.

"You should have been dating Trent.  You remind me somewhat of the blind girl he dated during my and Daric's senior year.  He never dated bitches like Monique.  He probably did that just to pass the time.  He stayed in the hell that is Lawndale in order to make sure his sister was looked after since their parents are flaky."

"I guess that runs in the family."

"What, are you looking for a husband?  You put too much damn stock in finding the one."

"I..."

"You don't want to follow the example of some relative of yours that jumps from guy to guy.  Fuck that.  So you like someone and then date them and it doesn't work...shit happens.  You ought to be glad you weren't born in the shit I was born into.  Daric was the only stroke of luck that I've ever had, even though I rejected it at first."

"But I don't want to..."

"Waste time?  Quit living your life in a way that you think is the furthermost from whoever you are trying not to copy.  You are still letting them dictate the way you live."

Daria closed her eyes.  Angel was right.  Either way, she was letting Quinn's flighty dating life rule her.

"No, I won't continue with Tom."

"good."

"And..."

"And?"

"I'll see if it would be as bad as I think dating Trent."

Angel smiled, "he's not as flaky when Daric is around.  He has a way of lighting a fire under him."

The van continued down the road, towards the band's gig with the three guitar players finishing up playing 'Tuesday's Gone'(1).
