401: Partner's Complaint

You all may blame J. Francis Marion for that last chapter. It was his idea and I ran with it into a goal post...lol! This starts just before 401 and shall go through season 4.

'Why?' she asked her reflection. 'Why did I waste all that emotion on something that wouldn't work?'

Daria's grey eyes stared back at her. The disappointment Trent caused because of his failure and that last conversation she had had with him had snuffed out that flame and she was upset with herself for wasting so emotional energy on something that wasn't going to pan out. Sighing quietly, she decided she better make an appearance downstairs for the evening meal.

On and on she prattled. It seemed that Quinn had found someone else, that was of the male gender, to talk about. The auburn was getting annoyed about hearing the plans of how her sister would drain the bank account of another boy at Lawndale High.

"Why waste your time," Daria said, stopping Quinn in her tracks. The silence was so deafening that a pen could be dropped.

"I don't see it as a waste of time," Quinn countered.

"Face it, the only thing you'll do is drain every dime you can get out of him with remorse or regret. You have no emotional investment in any boy you find yourself liking. You leave them once they are tapped out and go on to the next victim. You make me sick," Daria finished wi9th a snarl and stormed off. Helen bit her lip. Her eldest daughter wouldn't normally react to Quinn talking about a boy like that.

"Quinn?" Helen began. Quinn sighed. There was only one explanation for this.

"I guess she found out that it wouldn't work out with him," Quinn said.

"What?" Helen asked, confused about what her daughter had just said.

"Mom, you should have seen how Daria was reacting around her art friend's brother," Quinn remarked.

"Trent?"

"Yeah, him, anyway, it was obvious to me that she liked him. I can't believe you didn't pick that up," Quinn said and Helen got a sheepish expression on her face.

"Then..."

"She found out that she couldn't have anything meaningful with him," Quinn said with some bitterness and Helen sighed.

"Why didn't I see it?"

"Well, you were so busy squeezing Daria's friend for useless information that you didn't ask her the right questions. How can Daria want something meaningful now? Can't she just have fun?" she complained and Quinn stormed off. Helen sighed yet again.

"Where are the girls?" Jake asked after coming out from his newspaper reading stupor. Helen rubbed at her temples. It was going to be a long night.

She threw her clothes into the hamper and stepped into the running hot water. The paint was trying its best to stay on her, but Daria was relentless in getting the school colors off of her body. After fifteen minutes of vigorous scrubbing, all the yellow and blue was gone. She wrapped herself in a towel and headed back for her room. Knowing she only had one other thing she could wear, she put on the same outfit she wore to the failed journey to Alternapalooza. Putting her boots back on, she headed back to the bathroom, collected her clothes, headed for the laundry room and stuffed them into the washer.

'What am I going to do? I was enjoying myself around Jane's boyfriend!'
She needed someone to talk to about this and there was only one other person she could talk to about this. Well, two, but her aunt was off vacationing again, so that left Trent.

He tried to pay attention to her words, but that was difficult seeing what she was wearing. He had hoped if she wore pants that the urges he felt with her wearing that skirt would have gone, but seeing her in jeans didn't nothing to give him relief from his lower head's thoughts. However, he managed to concentrate enough to get the gist of her adventure with Tom.

"You like him then?" Trent asked.

Daria bit her lip. "Right for the throat I take it."

"That's what this is about isn't it? You enjoyed spending time with him."

"That's the problem, I shouldn't have enjoyed it."

"You didn't do anything to betray Jane's trust."

"No, but I could easily find myself doing so if I keep spending more and more time with him."

"If he can't break it off with Jane before getting with you then you don't need someone like that," Trent said. "I got excited."

"Huh?"

"That whole project thing...I got myself excited thinking you and Janie would be doing some one year long thing that when you told me you needed thirty seconds of music I let my excitement, while mostly gone, do the talking. That was stupid of me."

"I guess I should have told you right off what I needed."

"Yeah, then I wouldn't have said 'yes'. But, now, I've had to kick Nick out of the band."

"You did?"

"Yeah. I was getting tired of him and Max fighting all of the time and since Max has the tank I decided that Nick could go. What are you going to do?"

"Stay as far away from him as possible."

"Hmmmm, Jane might not let you do that."

"I don't want to waist more emotional energy on another guy."

Trent bit his lip, "You want something meaningful."

"I don't like having to date around like my sister. I rather find the one I'm supposed to be with, if he exists, and not waste time with meaningless relationships."

"Like I did with Monique," Trent put in.

"I thought you liked her."

"No. I saw her as an escape from the band...and that was wrong of me, but I really didn't too much care. I wasn't really that in to her."

"This hurts...why did I crush on you if it wasn't going to pan out in the first place?"

Trent sighed and pulled her into a hug. She silently cried against him and he rocked her in his arms.

'I've got to fix this shit. I messed up and I've got to fix it.' he thought. "I'm sorry. It was stupid of me to commit to something that I couldn't come through with for you. And, I didn't soften the blow properly."

"What do you mean by that?" she asked, looking up at him.

"This," he replied and leaned down and kissed her, but this time on the lips. He pulled back and pressed his forehead against her own. "If I'm going to kiss you, I might has well do it it right, huh?"

Daria blushed, but didn't pull away, enjoying being this close to him.

"Let's forget that fucking project and pretend it never happened, and I promise not to say 'yes' to any school assignments," Trent suggested.

"Then, if we do that, where do we go from there?"

"We hang out with each other and see if this can work...and I'd like to see if it does. And, I won't use to escape from the band, but you might let me rant about them now and again."

"Ok," she said with a small smile, "just as long as you let me complain about my family."

"Deal," Trent said with a grin.

She snuck into Trent's room...something about Penny's room just didn't sit well with her. Besides, this would give her more time with Trent. The two had been getting close, and Trent, unlike most of his relationships back when he was in high school, was taking it slowly with Daria.

An hour had passed when Trent opened the door and came in, returning from his late practice. Seeing the figure dozing on the bed he tried not to disturb the figure that was laying there. The one thing he did do was take her glasses off and put them on his night stand. Tossing aside his jeans and shirt, he pulled the dozing auburn against him and feel asleep himself.

Tom was about to ring the doorbell when Daria and Trent came out. This caught Tom off guard by the sight of the two.

"Hey, Jane's upstairs, but you better look out, she's on a power tool trip," Trent said.

"Uh, where are the two of you off to?" Tom asked nonchalantly.

"Pizza," Trent simply answered and the two walked passed him, but Trent gave him a look that clearly said 'I got here first'. Tom stood there, shocked, that the two were together. The evidence of them being together was piled upon Tom as he saw Trent put an arm around her shoulders. He sighed and decided to go inside. He just h9oped that Trent would make a mistake and he would be able to get her, at least, he hoped Trent would mess up. However, he had a bad feeling that the older boy wasn't going to mess up this time.
