Superintendent Cartwright continued looking over the records of the student that he was having a discussion with. So far, the only conclusion that he could make about why she was speaking out against the soda contract was that perhaps she was getting some sort of extracurricular credit for this. Of course, he had voiced that, but then he noticed that he hadn't checked the part of her record that came from Highland. Quickly looking through it, he came to a realization.

"Now I see what is going on." Cartwright began.

"Huh?"

"You came from a school, in Highland High, that was on the verge of losing its accreditation. The only reason that it was keeping it was because it had you to prop up the poorly performing students that attended that school. You knew that you had to keep the school's status in order for you to go to a good college. However, your family moved here to Lawndale with a school that doesn't have those problems and you decided to retire from being scholastic protector. Now though, you believe that Ultra Cola and Principal Li have entered some sort of dirty deal and you now want to come out of retirement. Do I have my facts right, or not? for if I don't, please, feel free to correct me."

Daria sat there stunned. She hadn't counted on Superintendent Cartwright to go that far back in her records. "It's not that I want to come out of retirement, as you put it, it's just that this whole thing has a rotten smell to it. This budget crisis that Li's facing wouldn't be so bad if someone would audit the books on a regular basis." Daria countered finally regaining most of her wits about her.

"All I see here is a student with a split personality. There's this lazy slacker who doesn't care about the school or her fellow students, and then there's this Highland High protector who only keep the school on her shoulders for her own selfish reasons. I must admit, though, I've never had such a stimulating and enlightening conversation. now, I believe we're finished here." Cartwright said and Daria sighed before getting up and leaving Cartwright's office.

"Alright, what could have the Superintendent said that is eating at your soul?" Jane asked while painting.

"He picked me apart better than I pick other people apart. He found my Highland records and knew that I was the one that kept that damn school afloat with my performance there. Now he thinks I want to keep Lawndale from falling the same way. Am I a slacker?"

"Whoa, you a slacker? Do you sleep 18 hours a day?" Jane asked and Daria sighed.

"Is it because the world is so full of idiots that I just complain and do nothing about it because there isn't anything that I can do about it?"

"You could always take over the world." Jane joked and Daria sighed.

"Fine. If that is how everyone in this damn situation feels about it then I'll keep my mouth such and watch the carnage take place."

"There's my slacker best friend." Jane joked.

"Why is this just one big joke to you?"

"Hey, why should I care that there are more soda machines in the school? Hell, I'm not surprised corporations don't do more of this all the time just to make a buck."

"Now you're starting to sound like your sister."

"Damn, if I start talking about moving to someplace with a volcano, shoot me."

"Noted."

Daria sighed quietly as she looked over another old yearbook in the library. Then, she caught sight of a group picture of a familiar band. It was Mystik Spiral, but Nick was missing. In his stead was a messy dark brown haired, amber eyed senior with a pale skinned, black hair girl at his side. The other thing that caught her attention was the dirty blond girl at Trent's left. She had to be no more than 5'1" and wore similar clothes to her own. However, she could see a folding caine in its holster with the girls left hand attached to Trent's right elbow.

'She's blind. I've never seen any blind students at Lawndale. I'm going to talk to Trent. I need to know more about the recent history of this damn school.' she thought and left once the bell rang.

"Hey Daria," Trent greeted after she came into his room.

"I know you might have missed a few classes in your time being imprisoned at LHS, but I need to find out why there is so much of an uncaring feeling about a soda company having such over the top advertisements around the school and the am mount of soda machines that have popped up."

"Whoa, Li's at it again?" Trent asked.

"Yeah. I found a picture in a yearbook, it's you, Jessie, Max, two other students I've never seen before..."

"That's Daric Lynn and Angel Blackstar. Daric was the Spiral's original bass player and Angel was the Spiral first and only keyboard player." Trent explained.

"And the blind girl that's in the picture?"

"Oooh," Trent said and smiled at the memory. "She was my girlfriend throughout my 10th grade year there. Unfortunately, the moment tat Grove Hills opened, and when the parents that did give a damn put their students into Fielding, the school started to go down hill."

"What happened to...?"

"She ended up going to the Connecticut school for the blind in Stanford(1)." Trent explained.

"So that's why there are no blind students at Lawndale High."

"That and the fact Li would have to shell out money she doesn't want to shell out." Trent added.

"Thanks Trent, now i know where all this apathy comes from."

"Wished things would have turned out better between us." Trent said quietly.

"Huh?" Daria asked.

"Nothing." Trent quickly replied and Daria left. "Damn it. Why did she have to end up with Tom? Why did I fuck up like I did? Why didn't I just take a chance even if she wasn't 18?" he asked himself. He sighed, picked up his guitar and starting playing. He didn't want to think about any of that at the moment. He had messed up making himself look undesirable in her eyes and now she was dating Tom which made her off limits to him.

"I heard that things at school got back to normal when the Superintendent restructured that contract with Ultra Cola." Helen began.

"Don't look at me, it was Li going on a soda rampage that did it. He didn't like me showing up and trying to rock the boat."

"You talked to Superintendent Cartwright?" Helen asked shocked.

"I did, and he raked me over the coals. He believed at first that my complaining was a facade for getting extracurricular activities on my college application. Then he went through my time at Highland and you can guess what ran through his mind then."

"I'm sorry, Daria. If we could have gotten you into a better public school we would have, but until they allow for school choice students will just have to suffer going to bad schools like Highland was."

"I'm never doing that again. If I'm going to be met up with that much apathy every time some crooked scheme comes up then I'm not going to complain about it. I'll just stand back and watch Rome burn, but without the fiddle." Daria said and left the kitchen table. Helen sighed to herself. Her daughter's activism was being crushed by apathy. Helen knew that Daria got that from her, but that small part was being crushed.

'She's only got one more semester and she's out of LHS, but what about Quinn? She's got one more year and who knows what Li will do next for money.' Helen thought and then her phone rang. She sighed knowing that it was probably Eric with some sort of a hang nail problem. If this kept up she was going to look for another firm that actually needed a partner.

1. I don't know if this really exists, so don't flame me for it. However, I myself attended a state school for the blind so I've got experience with them. Yeah, I know, Lawndale's probably near Baltimore, but I don't know why I like the idea of the city being in Connecticut.
