Another post-mordum one. Feel free to flame me for coming up with some history that isn't canon.

She looked at the same small section of the story...the same section that she'd been staring at for the past two hours. She glared at the piece of paper with the 'A' near the top of the page. Her mother had liked it, O'Neill liked it, but now that she was really taking a look at it, she didn't like it.

"Mom and dad are retired, Quinn is stuck with kids, and I am married to some college professor? Where the hell did that last bit come from? And why haven't I published a novel? Why stick myself with a job at the newspaper? Why work for a dying medium? And, am I telling myself that I'm wasting time and emotional energy with this crush I have for Trent?" she questioned herself. She glared at the story and made a decision. Kneeling on the floor, she started digging around the underside of her bed. Finding what she was looking for, she pulled out a box and opened it. She opened it and dumped the contents of it beside her. The stack of papers made a quite splat sound as they hit the floor. Before burying her assignment for O'Neill, another piece of paper caught her eye. This one had writing written in crayon, but Daria recognized the title.

"My first Melody Powers story," she said in awe. The anger she had before was replaced with affection for what she considered her favorite of her works. Written on a whim after suffering through her father watching a James Bond movie marathon, she had created the character and written a simple short story about her first mission, but being written by a seven year old, none of the over top gore, violence, and sex appeared in it.

"Yo! You in there!?" Jane called out.

"Yeah, c'mon in." Daria replied distractedly. Jane came in and saw her friend going through a very large stack of papers.

"Sorting through your plans for world domination?" Jane asked.

"No. Preparing a burial place for that last assignment O'Neil gave me." Daria answered not knowing that she'd left that stupid story on her bed.

"Oh, you mean this thing." Jane said now holding the offending piece of paper. Daria glared up at her friend, but didn't stop her from reading it.

"This made your mother cry? It almost fits...I see you created yourself a husband for yourself." Jane teased. Daria sighed. That was the real reason she hadn't wanted Jane to read the thing.

"I'm wasting my time aren't I?" Daria asked.

"Well, planning to take over the world isn't a waste of time..."

"I mean...am I wasting my emotional energy on something that I don't even believe will happen? He's oblivious, you said it yourself...plus, he'd probably rather date someone like Monique."

"Monique? When did you have the displeasure of meeting her?"

"When Trent got me to pierce myself." Daria replied and continued her sorting, pulling out every single Melody Powers story and setting them aside.

"Ah, they are still on their longest down time to date."

"What do you mean?"

"He hasn't gone out with her since before you came to Lawndale. You didn't show weakness by crying out in pain when Axl pierced you did you?"

"Uh, no," she answered with a blush.

"Impossible, you have a very low threshold of pain. You couldn't have felt nothing when the deed was down. You have to take pain pills the moment your back gives a little protest to you."

"Uh, Trent...uh...held my hand." she said saying the last bit very fast.

"Care to repeat that last bit of that sentence?"

"He held my hand alright." she repeated extremely flustered.

"Ah, the ultimate anaesthetic, holding the hand of the one you truly love." Jane teased and Daria gave her a death glare.

"Just how am I supposed to get over this?"

"You can't completely get over it, but if you want to kill your crush then you've got to be willing to spend more time with my brother. Right now, that small, little heart of yours wants something that your massive brains doesn't think you can have. You've got to convince your heart that either Trent is no good for you, or he's perfect for you. Either, you've got to quit being timid around him. He's not going to bite nor is he going to hurt you on purpose. If he does it unknowingly, that's when I'll step in and make sure he knows he's hurt you." Jane explained.

"You're right...I'll never get anywhere being frightened of him. And, how can I prove to myself that I'm wasting time when a part of me doesn't believe it."

"Good, now, why haven't you buried this thing?"

"I'm gathering all my old Melody Powers stories. I don't want them stored with everything else."

"Ah, favored work I see. Here, let's get this done and go devour a pizza or two." Jane said and joined her friend in sorting through all the older works. Once gathered, the O'Neil assignment was put at the bottom of the box and the rest were placed on top and the box was put back. Daria then drug out a notebook and stuffed the older Melody Powers stories in it.

'There, now I won't lose this stuff whenever I decide to actually try to publish it. Fine, one way or the other, I'm going to convince that this is or isn't a waste of my emotions.' she vowed in her head and the two friends headed for the Pizza King.
