Three weeks had gone by since the first time that team Alphanumeric had taken down the Butcher. No criminal activity was going on in the city. The only thing that happened of any consequence was that a new student showed up in class named Tim Drakesford. He and Becky quickly befriended each other and were somewhat attached at the hip most of the time unless Becky was spending time with Violet. Currently, the Botsfords were loading up the car for a three day vacation to the beach.
"It'll be good for us to get away from the city for a while." Mr. Botsford says loading the last of the luggage.
"The good thing about this trip is that I won't have to hang around the house with both my sister and her boyfriend." TJ teases.
"He's not my boyfriend." Becky growls.
"Actually, we invited Tim to join us." Mr. Botsford states.
"What!? No way!" TJ complains.
"Now TJ, that poor boy is always stuck at home because his mother doesn't believe in taking a vacation from being a shark, I mean lawyer." Mrs. Botsford says correcting the shark comment quickly. "I've never met such an infuriating defense attorney in my life!"
"Sorry I'm late," Tim says with his bag strapped on his shoulder, "my mother wanted to do one more over the phone check of my bag before I left."
"That's ok, here, I'll put that in the trunk." Mr. Botsford says and takes the heavy bag from Tim. Mr. Botsford struggles with it until he gets it into the trunk of the car. Becky and Tim quickly claim their seats in the back.
"This trip is going to be sooo boring." TJ quietly complains.
***
Tobey sighs as he looks out of his hotel room's window. His mother had forced him to come with her on this business/vacation trip. He then sees a familiar car with a familiar family coming out of it.
"Well now, if it isn't the 'love birds'." Tobey says to himself. "I'm going to show Tim Drakesford who is the smartest. This will give me an opportunity to use my giant tortoise robot." he says whipping out the remote and smiling mischievously.
***
"Would you look at that hon?" Mrs. Botsford says to her husband as the two watch the two older children. "I think we're witnessing the start of young love between those two."
"Please, don't talk about my daughter dating. It gives me ulcers." Mr. Botsford states exasperatedly.
"You know we're going to have to start letting go sooner or later dear."
"Can it be later?" The two continue to talk about their daughter's future dating life, Tim and Becky were splashing each other. TJ, who thought it would be funny, dumps a whole bucket of water on Becky. TJ laughs at what he had done until he feels someone grab him from behind and dunks his head into the water. TJ turns to see a smirking Tim. The younger boy starts to approach, but he is once again dunked, this time by his sister. Seeing that he was outnumbered TJ decides to retreat. The two hold each other up from falling down in laughter. They calm down and notice a disturbance in the water.
"Hey, there's something coming up out of the water." Becky says and Tim turns to see something silver immerges to the surface. They feel a moment of horror as they see the giant turtle coming out of the water.
"Wait a minute, I don't remember any turtle species being that color." Tim notes.
"It's got to be one of Tobey's robots." Becky explains.
"It certainly is. Now, let's see if WordGirl will show up if I do this!" Tobey says and pushes a button. Out of one of the sides of the mechanical reptile, a metal tentacle lashes out and raps itself around Tim. Tobey pushes another button and Tim feels a harsh electric jolt.
"What are you doing to him!?" Becky shouts.
"Oh just a little shock therapy. Hahaha."
"Let him go." Becky growls.
"You're just average Becky Botsford. You can't hurt me. Now if you're saying that you're WordGirl, then you might be able to stop my giant turtle robot." Tobey gloats.
"You're hurting him!" Becky shouts.
"Don't worry, it won't kill him. Just to show that I won't kill him," he says and pushes another button and the tentacle drops Tim inside the robot. "he'll be fine inside my robot...," but before he could say anymore Bob attacks Tobey and tries to get the remote.
"Get him Bob!" Becky encourages as she tries to make her way to the shoreline in order to help. She dives behind a large sand dune and transforms. She then hears an explosion and manic laughter.
"Hahahaha! Look what I've done Tobey." a voice says from the robot.
"Tim?" WordGirl quietly asks.
"I don't know what you did to me, but I like the new me. I don't have to be that goodie-goodie me anymore. Now, I'll show you how to pilot a robot!" Tim shouts and another laser blast fires out of the turtles eyes barely missing Tobey and Bob.
'Oh no, that intense zap to his system must have done something to him. I've got to get into that thing.' WordGirl thinks. "Word up!" she shouts and flies over to the robot. She gets on top of the shell and rips open the hatch.
"WordGirl! Don't go in there! He's gone insane!" Tobey frantically shouts.
***
"So, you think you can reach him do you? Hate to say it little Lexiconian, but he's not going to hear you...," Tim begins, but he feels his body slammed up against the wall of the robot.
"Snap...,out...,of...,it!" WordGirl shouts slapping him on every word. She then shakes him in an attempt to make the new persona let go of Tim's mind. "C'mon! don't give up Tim! You're better than him!"
"No, I won't let you back in..,arrrrgggghhhh!" Tim shouts and crumples to the floor. WordGirl gets down onto the floor with him and holds the now shuttering Tim.
"Are you alright?" she asks.
"I...,think...,I'm under control now. I don't know what happened. After Tobey started shocking me I lost consciousness. Then I heard your voice trying to reach me and I managed to beat back that darker part of me."
"I didn't know you could turn one of Tobey's robots against him."
"I've never been in this situation before. I know how the other me did it and I know how to work this thing, but I've never been interested in robotics nor have I read up on the subject."
"WordGirl!? Are you still alive in there!?" Tobey shouts.
"Hey Tim, which button is the laser?" WordGirl asks.
"That one. This one here is for the intercom, which was something that this thing didn't have." Tim says still trying to come to grips with what he'd done.
"Alright Tobey, time for a taste of your own medicine." WordGirl says and targets just to the right of Tobey and fires.
"Ahh!" Tobey shouts.
"Doesn't feel good to be on the other side of your robots is it Tobey?" WordGirl asks.
"WordGirl! How are you in control of my robot!?" Tobey asks.
"Will you behave, or should I fire again?"
"Ok! I'll behave."
"You'll leave Becky and Tim alone for the rest of their trip?"
"I will...,I will!" Tobey says frantically.
"Where's the selfdestruct button?" WordGirl asks Tim."
"That one." Tim says pointing to a big red button which WordGirl pushes and she grabs Tim and flies out of the turtle robot just before it explodes.
***
Tim was on the balcony looking up at the night sky. His eyes were trained on the constellation Cygnus, or more commonly known as the Northern Cross. He doesn't hear the sliding door open nor does he hear Becky coming towards him.
"Hey, dinner will be here soon." she says startling him for a moment.
"Thanks."
"What are you looking at?"
"Cygnus."
"Which one is Cygnus?"
"That one." Tim points out and Becky follows his finger. "Astronomy was one of the first subjects I started to enjoy that was outside of math. It seems any field of math or science is something I'm good at along with all the other things that make me different from the human race."
"It wasn't your fault you know."
"Yeah, I know but if that part of me comes out again I may not be able to beat it back again."
"Don't worry, we'll get through this together. We are 'Team Alphanumeric' you know."
"yeah." he replies with a grin on his face.
"So, what is so interesting about Cygnus?"
"Not only did I arrive with technology from my home world, but I also have two data disks. One was a star chart of the skies of planet Decimal along with a lot of other general information about the planet. It took me some time, but I figured out that my home world is somewhere in the Northern Cross. I prefer that name over Cygnus."
"Huggy won't even tell me which direction to look in the sky to even try to find my home world's star."
"It would be a little ironic in a way if planet Lexicon was in the Southern Cross." Tim comments. He was about to continue, but Mrs. Botsford calls the pair in for dinner.
Author's Ramblings
I like to thank just_me for reviewing this story. I'm trying to be as original as possible and I've never seen something like this. Tim's creation is probably from the love of another PBS show called Square One. You guys know where to go to find info about the constellations mentioned in this part.
