"Rolling her eyes at her friend's justification for volunteering at the hospital, she looks over the remaining choices. She frowns at the prospect of reading to seniors. She begins to resign herself to her fait when she sees another position at the hospital.
"Well, looks like I'll be able to see the fruits of your labor. They need a candy striper in the maternity ward." Daria says signing herself up.
"Given the choice to work with the very old or the very young, you choose the very young...,interesting."
"I won't have to put up with Kevin and Brittany at the hospital."
"You sure you want to deal with helpless infants?"
"Infants aren't smart enough to judge you by how you read."
***
'Of course, they had to give me the most difficult one to deal with.' Daria says looking down at the crying child. "Like I'll be able to do any better. C'mon Gabriel, it's feeding time." She lifts the crying child up and said infant quiets immediately. A Mona Lisa smirk crosses her face. 'Maybe we'll get along better than I thought. You're far better company than a certain quarterback and cheerleader.'

"So, how'd the first day of child rearing go?" Jane asks.
The kid they given me is one that won't cooperate with the rest of the staff, so as usually they give him to me, but he decides to quiet down for me. I now find myself questioning how strong of a person I am."
"What...?"
"His mother died from giving birth to a child that was conceived under the worst circumstances."
"You don't mean?" Jane asks all humor now gone.
"Yes. He's a rape baby. But, the mother was a devout Christian and wouldn't abort the child. Then she had complications during labor and died. Her last act was to give the child his name."
"Whoa, looks like this week won't be filled with the normal stupid hijinks that would normally happen with one of the tyrant's fiendish plans."
"I'm thinking about letting them hire me just to take care of him." Daria quietly comments.
""What?" Jane asks in surprise.
"That kid's gotten to me. I don't how, but he has. And if I can earn extra money from it, then that's a bonus."
'You sure about this?"
"I'll get the opinion of one of the parental units, then make my final decision."
"Tomorrow I'll make sure Trent can come pick us up. It's a long walk from the hospital you know."
"I needed it though."

A beautiful piano rift starts off the song, then the guitars cut in and finally, the first verse starts. After the song ends the basement door opens.
"I was wondering why the earthquake machine known as the Spiral was sounding like it was making real music. It's bass and keyboard players are back." Jane says smirking at Daric and Angel.
"You're getting back late from school." Trent comments.
"Glad ya noticed." she says taking the opportunity to give her brother a friend jibe. "Li's got every student doing volunteer work. Me and Daria are the hospital. Think you can drag yourself and that thing that claims to be a car there at seven?"
"No problem." Trent replies.

"Hey," Jane says startling Daria, "it's 7:15, time to go."
"Uhh, Oh," Daria says now looking over at the clock. "Sorry Jane, he didn't want to go to sleep."
"Ah, so this is the new man in your life." Jane retorts and Daria rolls his eyes. They hear a chuckle and the two girls see Trent standing there.
"Cute kid, you'll make a good mother." Trent replies looking down at Gabriel.
"Ummm, thanks." Daria quietly mumbles and puts the sleeping child down. To Daria's relief, he continues to sleep.
"C'mon, let's go get some pizza." Jane suggests and the three leave.

"Ok Helen, why did you call me?" Amy asks quite curious about why her sister would call her.
"It's Daria."
"What...?"
"She was forced to choose somewhere to volunteer at for a week by that tyrant of a principal. I'm only guessing she chose the hospital because that's where her friend was, but there's a new problem."
"What?"
"She was volunteering in the maternity ward and was given an orphaned child that has bonded with her."
"She hasn't been handling it well then?"
"Actually she's handling it a little too well."
"She's bonded with the child as well."
"Exactly. The state is looking into putting the child in foster care, but the child doesn't seem to trust any other person except for Daria. That's why the doctors and the state agreed and had the child put here."
"Couldn't fight it?" Amy asks teasing.
"Not against all that, besides my daughter would have agreed with them."
"Well, at least it's not a child through pregnancy."
"Yes, the situation could've been worse, but I just don't understand why she got attached to Gabriel in the first place."
"You've forgotten the curse haven't you."
Helen bites her lip. "Are you sure that's why?"
"Positive. The wearcat does have strong maternal instincts as well."
"I just don't want my daughter...,"
"If she wants to be the mother of this child, then you might not be able to stop her, especially if it's the wearcat driving her."
"You're right of course. I guess I can blame Li for this."
"That's my lawyerly sister." Amy quips.

A brown haired blue eyed boy waits outside the room where his mother was talking to his teacher. For a kid of seven, he had patience, but it was running out. Then he heard the door opening and his mother and teacher come out.
"Now I understand how he is so far ahead of the other children." the comments.
"I wanted him to be ready before he started attending school." the auburn replies.
"You certainly did that, Mrs. Lane." the teacher replies. "Gabriel is certainly a well behaved child for his age."
"He gets it from me. I was quiet and read a lot at his age. C'mon Gabriel, your father will be home in a few hours and no doubt he and Uncle Jessie will be starving."
"Ok mom." Gabriel replies.
"See you on Monday, Gabriel." the teacher calls back and heads into her classroom.
"Hey, ready to get this brood home? how the parent teacher conference go?"
"Fine Jane. Ms. Stolt was concerned about his above than average progress."
"Only you would prepare a child to scare teachers, Daria." Jane says as her own pair of boys cling to her sides.
"Let's go." Daria says ant the two long time friends leave Lawndale Elementary School for the Lane compound.
