Chapter 1
---------------------------
They were cold. Both cold and tired. The only object of warmth they had available to them were the blankets and jackets some of the men wearing black suits had given them during their long 24-hour journey to the middle of nowhere. The girls were exhausted and frightened. And what was worse, was that the two teenagers didn’t even know who the other was. Or the men in black suits who had taken them from their homes by force when neither wanted to leave. It was hard for them both to see as they were blindfolded before they left the plane they were forced onto.
One of them, a blonde girl with green eyes, undid the knot in the back of her blindfold and cocked her head to the side to peer over at her room mate for the time being. The other girl had brown hair with gray eyes. Since they weren’t going to be leaving that room for awhile, the blonde decided to make some small talk.
“Um, hey.” She whispered.
The brunette shivered as she glanced next to her from the cot she was sitting on. “Who-Who are you?”
With a small smile, she replied, “What’s your name?”
“Ashley.” Was all the brunette claimed.
“Do you have a last name?”
“Marshall.”
With a slight nod, the green-eyed female replied, “And I’m Maddie Ray.”
Ashley’s eyes scanned the surrounding atmosphere. The room was lit by a simple bulb on the ceiling with a small window to let in air and a cement floor with a few cots lined up around the walls. “Where are we?”
Maddie shook her head. “I don’t know. But wherever we are, I don’t think we’re near our homes. At least judging by how long we were driving and on that plane.” Needing to know, she asked, “How’d you get here?”
Ashley trembled with panic. She had been home all snug and warm on the couch watching her Transformers series when the door busted open and several unknown, armed men surrounded her. The poor teen had screamed at the top of her lungs, but nobody came to her rescue. She was all alone at home while her family was out of town for the weekend. The next thing she knew, her heart was down in her gut as they swiftly grabbed her under each armpit, and dragged her away while she was kicking and screaming. With nothing else to do, Ashley slumped, her weight half-dragged, half-carried to the awaiting vehicle. The door wasn’t even shut before they haphazardly threw into the backseat and stormed off like a bat out of hell.
Maddie’s eyes widened after hearing Ashley’s shocking tale. No wonder she’s such a mess. They just broke in, grabbed her and sped out of there. With Maddie, they were more gentle.
“What about you?” Ashley wondered. “What’s your story?” The brunette was a little more tranquil since she now had a buddy in the room with her. It didn’t seem as bad.
The blonde relayed her story to her new, but probably temporary, friend.
“I was on my computer in my room.” She shrugged. “I was writing some Transformers fan fiction. After uploading a new chapter, my doorbell rang so I went to get it.” Her head shook. “I swear I thought they were the Men in Black or something along those lines. And when they asked me to come with them, I asked them to where and they kept quiet.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “They had guns and I was afraid they would use them if I didn’t listen to what they told me. So, I was able to do whatever and leave with them. I was in a car and on the same plane as you before they brought us into this room blindfolded.”
Ashley twisted her hands together in her lap, the simple fleece blanket wrapped around her shoulders. “Why do you think they took us?”
“To tell you the truth, I have no idea why.” Then, after repeating Ashley’s story in her head, she asked, “You like Transformers?” Green eyes blinked.
Ashley brushed a few strands of hair behind her ear before flushing. “Uh, yeah. Watched it since I was little.”
Maddie smirked. “Me, too.”
It seemed the topic would be able to calm them both down some. They were able to find something they had in common and it was going to help get them through what they believe to be a nightmare.
------------
It was around midnight. The only sounds available were the roar of engines, people talking and the music that blared from the speakers lodged onto the corners of a huge garage-like base. There were several buildings lined up beside each other just like it, all were painted the same color silver with flood lights lighting the land. Several armed men in military attire, were lurking around on their hourly patrol. A variety of men wearing the same kind of black suit were scouring the area themselves to make sure no outsiders set a foot into their base.
There were several trees lining around the security gates of the huge base area to block anybody who dared set foot on the uncharted island. But if anybody did, silent alarms would be set off and give them time to mobilize since whoever triggered it would have to go several miles to reach that huge base area.
The wind blew slightly, a breeze brushing the back of a bare neck. She leaned on her side against one of the building walls near a small security door, a floodlight passing over her. Her green hair was put into a tight ponytail near the top of her head. Blue eyes were shut as she inhaled a cigarette settled between two of her fingers. Her denim jacket was left open showing a white tank top and the blue denim flares she wore flapped against the back of her calves.
Zaru Kiys was ready to call it a night. But when she had received word of new arrivals in the base, her heart sunk. More defenseless girls brought in. She shook her head. Another day on the job. Throwing down her half-smoked cigarette, she stamped it out with the toe of her black knee boot before pushing herself away from the wall and walking away. Her hands dug into the pockets of her jacket as she slowly walked into the open passing some armed guards who saluted her. She frowned slightly. How she hated being there. But it wasn’t like she had a choice in the first place.
So, the young woman made her way across the area and toward a small, cemented building to speak with, and hopefully be able to calm down, the newcomers.
