"'The Fugitives': Aftermath"

NOTE: WOOHP is an acronym for the World Orginization Of Human Protection

Sam, Clover and Alex stand accused, by their boss and their fellow WOOHP agents, of bank robbery. They escaped from their holding cell, comandeered a WOOHP jet helicopter and abandoned fish cannery as a base of operations. Thanks to a portable satallite link, they reviewed the bank's survveilence tape and noticed evidence that was missed. After retrieving said evidence, the girls found out that it was a piece of skin instead of fabric. They also discovered that the skin was created by Replitech Industries, which called for a trip to Replitech Island. Upon arrival, Sam activated the helicopter's stealth mode, so they wouldn't be discovered. The girls found out that a special kind of force field surrounded the buildings, which allowed only organics to pass through. Alex was lowered on a rope, carrying a lipstick sized camera, so the other girls could see what was happening. Sam, Clover and Alex were discovered by the people on the island, whom as they discovered, were making clones of the three of them and simultaniously, the girls were found by there fellow WOOHP agents. So complete was the surprise, that there wasn't even time to reel Alex in.

And now the story begins...

While the girls' jet chopper was busy dodging fire from the WOOHP gunships, Alex was litterally left dangling at the end of a rope. She was accidentally swung into the path of one of the WOOHP gunships, with the result being that the roter of the ship cut the rope, sending the young spy plummeting to her death. Quickly, Sam put the helicopter into a steep dive and Clover pressed a button on the console, igniting the jets. In no time, the copter sped past their falling friend. Sam positioned the chopper beneath Alex and Clover flipped a switch to activate the rescue device, which opened a hatch in the roof and simultaniously the center seat, Alex's seat, automaticly moved backwards untill it was directly beneath the opened hatch.

At least that's what was supposed to happen. Or rather, what should have happened.

But when Clover flipped the switch, to her utter shock, nothing happened. She flipped it off and then back on again, once, twice, three times, trying to make the device work. Still nothing happened. Tears were beginning to blur her vision. Moments later, both she and Sam heatd a loud thud on the roof of their aircraft. Followed, shortly afterward, by a blood curdling scream. The two girls watched through the canopy as their young friend continued her fatal freefall to the ocean, which was now only twenty leagues below them.

ALEX!!! NOOOO!!!

Sam awoke with a fright and shot upright in bed. She was sweating as if she had one a marathon. As a result, her Bright Green pajamas were a bit darker now. Her screaming had awakened her mother, who rushed to her daughter's bedroom to find out what was wrong. When she opened the door, she saw Sam in the middle of her queen sized bed, her head buried in the pillow. Though it was muffled, Gabrielle could hear that her daughter was crying. She went to Sam's bedside and sat down.

"Sam..honey, what's wrong?" Gabrielle asked, as she caressed her daughter's back. A look of concern on her face.

Sam lifted her head from the pillow, when she heard her mother's voice and felt the caress. She looked to the right and saw the look on her mother's face.

Sam turned over, sat up in her bed and hugged her mother as tightly as she could. "Oh mom," she sobbed, i-it's Alex!"

"Alex? Carmen Vasquez's daughter? What about her dear?" Gabrielle asked, slowly returning her daughter's embrace.

"She"s...she's...she's..." Sam began to cry again.

Gabrielle had never seen her daughter quite this upset before. "She's what dear? Alex is what?" she asked.

"She's...DEAD!" Sam exclaimed and began to cry again.

"Dead? No, no, no, no dear. She's only sick."

"W-what do you mean 'sick'?"

"I talked to Carmen just yesterday at the supermarket." Gabrielle said, as she handed her daughter a box of tissues. "She told me that Alex merely had the flu." she added.

She then rose from Sam's bed, stretched and slowly yawned. "Don't worry honey, you'll see her tomorrow. Now go back to sleep." Gabrielle said, as she left the room, closing the door behind her.

Sam dried her eyes and blew her nose. She wanted to confirm that Alex was indeed alive and she knew of only one way to do that.

She turned on the lamp on her nightstand, opened the drawer and took out her Comm Powder, which could also be used as a cellular phone and dialed Alex's phone number. After a few minutes, she heard a message.

"Hello, this is the Vasquez residence. No one can come to the phone right now, so please leave a message at the sound of the beep and one of us will get back to you.

Sam didn't wait for the beep, hung up and closed her Comm Powder. She then flopped back on her bed and hugged her pillow. "Guess I'll just have to wait 'till tomorrow to find out for sure." she thought.

Moments later, she heard a familliar sound comming from her Comm Powder. She picked it up and answered. "H-hello?"

"Sam? Sammy, are you okay?"

It was Alex. 'She IS alive!' her mind exclaimed. Tears of joy filled her eyes. "Yeah I'm fine. Just had a nightmare."

"Must have been some nightmare. Anyway, sorry about the missed call. Had to use the little girl's room one more time, I hope. Why are you up at this hour? Oh, duh...you just told me that you had a nightmare."

"Yeah."

Alex yawned into the reciever. "Well, I'm going to bed. As Clover would say, 'Give me the 411 in the morning.' Good night."

"Count on it. Good night." Sam said, yawning herself. Like before, she hung up and closed the Comm Powder. This time, she also put the device back in the drawer, closed the drawer, turned off the lamp, rolled over and went to sleep. There was a smile of contentment on her lovely face.

3:05 - Clover's mansion

Clover Ewing was having a nightmare similar to Sam's, but augmented.

Moments later, both she and Sam heard a loud thud on the roof of their aircraft. Followed, shortly afterward, by a blood curdling scream. The two girls watched through the canopy, as their young friend continued her fatal freefall to the ocean, which was now only twenty leagues below them.

"ALEX!!! NOOOO!!!" Sam screamed, moments before Alex hit the water, with the force of a motorcycle and rider hitting a brick wall at sixty miles per hour.

Sam brought the choper down so low that the landing gear, if it were down, was completely submerged. After she egaged the auto-pilot, Clover opened the side door and she and Sam brought the listless body of their friend aboard, gently laid her on the floor and carefully turned her over. An immediate scan of Alex's body revealed the worst. She had broken most of her ribs, punctured a lung and ruptured her spleen. Sam knelt beside her friend and held her hand, while Clover got a blanket and pillow and carefully bundled her up.

After a few minutes of of mouth-to-mouth, Alex came to. She coughed up sea water, which was followed, moments later, by her own blood. She squeezed Sam's hand as best she could, given her condition. She reached up with her free hand and touched the cheek of a now kneeling Clover.

C-Clover...(cough)...S-Sammy...(cough)...b-best friends forever." Alex said weakly. Those were the last words that she ever spoke. Her breathing became less ragged, the very shallow, then it stopped altogether. Her hand then slid from Clover's cheek. The blonde spy's facial expression changed from one of great concern, to one of utter panic, to one of sheer terror.

Moments before her breathing stopped, Sam felt for a pulse and found one. It was weak, but it was there. Minutes passed and Alex's pulse grew weaker...and weaker...and weaker...until there was no pulse at all and her hand slipped from Sam's grasp. Alex was dead. Sam cried like she never had before. The most logical of the girls, she hugged her dead friend, in a vain attempt to transfer some of her body heat to Alex. Needless to say, it didn't work.

Clover trudged back to her co-pilot's seat. rested her right arm on the control panel, laid her head down on it and began to cry herself. She pounded the panel with her fist, to emphasize her anguish. It was then that the rescue device, which would've saved Alex's life, worked exactly as it should have. Clover glared at the center seat with fire in her eyes, "Oh sure, now you work properly, you STUPID PIECE OF SHIT!!!!" Sam had never heard either of the girls swear before, but given what just happened, she wasn't giong to speak to Clover about her language.

With a strength born of pure adrenaline, the blonde got up, ripped the center seat from it's moorings and threw it out the still opened door. After throwing the seat away, Clover turned, returned to her own seat and sat down. Instead of hearing a distant splash, which would mean that the hurled seat hit the water, she heard a very loud crash, like the breaking of glass.

The sound of breaking glass made her cringe.

Clover opened her eyes, but instead of seeing a control panel and the world through a helicopter windshield, she saw only a creamy color. She tried to rub her eyes, but found that she couldn't. She pushed herself back a little and found that she was lying in the prone position, with her head at the foot of her bed. How she got into that position, she didn't really know. Although she reasoned that it obviously happened during the night. She felt a gentle breeze, looked to her right, saw a pillow sized hole in her sliding glass door and realized that that was the crash she heard in her dream.

She heard her mother telling her, for the third time, to get out of bed or she'll be late for school. Clover looked at her clo radio and saw that the time was seven forty. Quickly, she got out of bed and took off her nightshirt. She then ran to the bathroom, hoping her parents wouldn't see her in just her thong panties. Once in the bathroom, she turned on the shower. After a minute, she removed her panties and stepped into the stall. After washing and rinsing her hair and shaving her legs, she turned off the water and stepped out of the stall. She then dryed herself and wrapped a towel around herself. She then went to her room, got out the blow drryer and blow dryed her hair.

After dressing and picking up her purse, she drove to school, trying not to think of life without Alex along the way. The blonde got to school in record time and entered, just as the first period bell rang. Clover saw a young woman, who resembled Alex, in her first period class. However, thinking that she was seeing things chalked up to wishfull thinking. After second period and before third, she went to the girls' bathroom, along with every other girl in school, for the mid-morning make-up check. In the restroom, she saw Donna Ramone, Sam and the dark skiied girl from her first period class.

"Alex?" she said, both boldly and a little hesitantly.

The dark skinned girl turn her head in the blonde's direction.

"ALEX!" Clover exclaimed, nearly tripping over the other girls, to give her friend the biggest hug she'd ever recieved.

"Hey, Clover. Good to see you too." Alex said, in a strangled voice, a little befuddled by her friend's actions.

A short time later, the girls left the restroom. "So you must've had the same nightmare as I had. Am I right Clover?"

Just then, Mandy walked up behind them. "If you're talking about Clover being named most popular girl in school, now that wold be a nightmare." she said, laughing.

"Actually Mandy, being named most popular girl in school would be a dream come true for me. Now you being elected student body president, there's a real nightmare." Clover said.

Mandy gave Clover an 'If looks could kill, you'd be dead.' looks and stormed off.

Donna Ramone, who had recently began wearing a leather jacket to school, (i.e. Fonzie from Happy Days) shouted "Hey Mandy! If I were you, which I'm glad I'm not, I'd quit while I was behind."

The violet haired girl turned around, stuck out her tounge at the four girls and continued on her way.

"Whoa, that was really mature...NOT." said Alex. She and the other girls laughed.

Donna turned to Alex and said, "Ya know you and me got off ta kind of a rocky start.

"Rocky? When that soccer ball hit your nail polish, I was hoped you'd give me time to make out my will." Alex said.

Donna just stared at Alex for a few seconds. "Whatever. what I'm tryin' ta say is, since then, you've been a real friend ta me. That's somethin' I ain't had since - well before juvie. It's kind of hard for me to say thanks, but thanks." she said.

"Aww, you're welcome Donna." Alex said, as she hugged her friend.

"Hey, hey, hey, watch the leatha!" Donna complained mildly.

Alex pulled away, but saw the smile on her friend's face.

"Later girls." said Donna, as she walked away.
