Prologue

The entire Wyvern Clan mourned. For their friend Elisa Maza, the only human member of the Clan, was dead.

The female detective's body had been found in her apartment days ago. Unmarked except for two small wounds in her neck, and completely drained of blood.

There were many suspects, for detective Maza had made many enemies during her career. Nevertheless, Elisa's colleagues could find no evidence linking any individual to the crime.

However, Goliath and his Clan had come to their own conclusions.

They believed the rogue Gargoyle Demona to be responsible.

For all of Elisa Maza's other major enemies were either imprisoned, dead, or (like David and Fox Xanatos) had seemingly made peace with the detective. Only the vengeful Demona remained free and deadly (so far as the Clan knew, at least).

Even Demona's daughter Angela, who had always been the most sympathetic and forgiving towards her mother of all the Clan, thought her mother had probably done it. Only the eldest member of the Wyvern Clan, Hudson, expressed any doubts. Hudson said that the way Elisa Maza had been killed reminded him of a series of murders that had occurred at Castle Wyvern when he was a youth (decades before Demona was even hatched) and suggested a different type of killer entirely.

But the rest of the Clan paid no attention to his doubts. They wanted vengeance for their friend's murder.

The Clan could not attend the funeral for it occurred during the day (though Elisa's family assured the Gargoyles they would have been welcome). But the Gargoyle Clan held their own mourning ceremony for their slain friend the next night.

Honoring Elisa Maza as a comrade who had fallen in battle. However, after the ceremony the Clan gradually left one at a time, until only the leader Goliath remained.

Once he was alone, the massive Gargoyle put his clawed hand on his lover's tombstone and promised her that he would make Demona pay for what she had done. However, eventually even Goliath left.

Hours later, a feminine hand burst from the earth of Elisa Maza's grave. Then the rest of its body followed.
