Kwan smiled his eyes bright as he stared down at the dance from the roof of a nearby building. “Do you often do this?” he asked, turning from the telescope to face his smaller companion.

“Only when I’m plotting something,” Danny replied, chuckling, “like how to get those two out of my hair.”

Kwan turned back to the dance with a smile, watching as a strange circle formed around the two dancing boys. “They’re getting allot of attention. I hope most of it is good.” He worried.

“Dash would beat anybody up who had a problem with it anyway.” Danny said, sitting on the air conditioning box with a bored expression. Truth be told he worried about his friend and the jock as well, but Kwan was nervous enough as it was.

“He’s not always like that you know.” Kwan said.

Danny looked down at his best friend dancing with the blonde and something angry and scared stirred within him. “He better not be.” He said in a tone that made Kwan stand straight and look at him.

“Fenton…” he warned.

“Sorry, but you try trusting your best friend to someone who abuses you on a daily basis.” Danny turned his head sharply away from the illuminated park to glare at the stairwell door. “I still don’t feel comfortable with it, but it’s his life. I’m his friend, not his father.”

“Even if you were I doubt you could do anything about it. I couldn’t, and I actually tried.” Kwan said, going to sit beside Danny.

“Yeah, but you had his popularity in mind, not really a convincing argument against love.” Danny said dryly. “I wanted to protect him. I didn’t want him to…to get hurt.” Danny suddenly looked deflated and Kwan surprised them both by putting a hand on his shoulder.

“Dash wouldn’t hurt him.” He said softly.

“So you say, and maybe it’s true, but I don’t think me and Dash could ever even be in the same room together without fighting. How could I just allow him to take my best friend away? Worse, I set it all up!” Danny buried his head in his knees, “I can’t believe I did that. Why didn’t I just let them walk away after that fight they had? Everything would be so much better now.”

Kwan stared at him.

“It wouldn’t have been though,” Danny answered himself, “Tucker would never be happy.”

“Not really. You saw how they were after that fight.”

“And it was all over me.” Danny laughed harshly at himself. “Because I goaded Dash and things got physical.”

“Foley wasn’t too happy about seeing Dash practically killing you in the hallway.” Kwan said with a nod. “Neither was anybody else really.” Kwan remembered how Danny had provoked Dash and then just stood there as Dash laid in to him. Danny and Dash were well known in how they bantered. Everyone was a bit surprised at how oddly Dash reacted to the taunts.

“Dash just snapped though.” Danny said. “I didn’t think he’d get that angry over little things.

“He had some pent up anger at his teacher.”

Danny leaned back Against Kwan, the strong hand on his shoulder a comfort he needed. “Do you think they’ll be alright?”

“If Dash doesn’t screw this up with his temper.” Kwan joked causing Danny to smile.

“He may get confused at Tucker sometimes. I bet they’re going to be fighting a bunch.” He looked back down at the thinning crowd on the dance floor. His watch said ten, curfew was coming and many kids were being picked up by their parents.

“We’ll just have to make sure they don’t kill each other than.”

“You planning on playing buffer with me?” Danny met his eyes, “cause by the way things are turning out tonight, I think we make a pretty good team.”

“I think we can work something out, should the time come our skills are needed.” Kwan smiled, adjusting his arm around the smaller teen and watching as their two best friends danced together straight through the next few songs.

“Guess we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other than.” Danny said softly.

“That a bad thing?”

“No.”

I actually only went back and edited spelling and grammar, so this is probably the best quality example of my older DP fictions. Danny/Kwan romantic friendship with Dash/Tucker in the background. This was supposed to be the start of a big long fic in which Danny and Kwan slowly developed a relationship while trying to straighten out Dash and Tucker’s couple problems. I never even got to finish writing even this chapter and, looking at this now, I figure it ended rather nicely as a one-shot.

Written April 2004, here are my opening thoughts on this back then, because I found it humorous:

Anybody else find that cute Asian Dash hangs out with totally slashable? Just me? Bah. You all suck badly. I’m wondering if the name people are telling me is his is actually like his sur-name. I don’t know. I’m not all that good with Cantonese (sp?). I’m more a Latin kinda girl. So, if its not actually his real name, as I don’t watch the show that often, feel free to correct me. I’m just going on what people have told me.

Sorry that Dash and Tucker moved more to the background here. I just wanted to try this new couple. I kinda like it. I still like D/T, no worries, but Danny and Kwan look promising. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll start watching the show more, my opinion may change.

And indeed it did! June 2006 Danny and Dash became my primary DP slash couple and poor Kwan was stuck in the background, rarely mentioned and hardly ever paired with anybody. My poor asian. *pats Kwan*

I still don’t know how I figured Kwan’s name out. I forget. I think I was reading some strange book when I heard his name. I don’t know, but I still think it’s a surname.
