Chapter 9

Scourge sniffed the air near the den. Something was not right. He went a little way out to a clearing and saw a problem. Two feral Sweeps were boldly approaching. Scourge knew this pair--it was a team of nomadic feral Sweeps, probably brothers, who had caused problems before when one of the other Sweeps had brought a female to the den. These two had wiped out three consecutive litters and taken the females for themselves. They snarled as they got closer, preparing to attack. Scourge drew his weapon and was about to use it but then he was unexpectedly blindsided and knocked to the ground. He felt someone's jaws close tightly around the back of his head, and razor sharp talons dug into his armor. There was a THIRD one?! Scourge thought in a panic. As soon as Scourge had been knocked down, the other two pounced as well, intent on tearing the Sweep Leader apart. His weapon was knocked out of his grasp with a slash of someone's claws.

Suddenly a volley of laser fire erupted from out of nowhere. Two of Scourge's attackers were hit, and all three bolted. Scourge looked up and saw Cyclonus, in jet mode, streaking down from the sky like a lightning bolt and still firing at the escaping rogues. He transformed and landed next to Scourge, pulling out his pistol and taking a few more shots to make sure that Scourge's attackers weren't going to regroup. Once he was satisfied that the three feral Sweeps were in full retreat, he helped Scourge up.

"Looks like I got here just in time," Cyclonus remarked.

"Thanks. Another minute and I would have been scrap," Scourge told him, "They must have sensed that I was alone."

Scourge had a few claw marks on him and the armor at the back of his head was somewhat dented, but otherwise he was none the worse for wear. But he was indeed lucky that Cyclonus had shown up when he did. A Sweep's jaws were the equivalent of a pit bull's in strength, compared to other Transformers. If the one who had attacked him from behind not been chased off, he would have crushed Scourge's cranial chamber.

"Why were those Sweeps attacking you?" Cyclonus wondered.

"They're troublemakers," Scourge informed him, "Two of them I've seen before. They're completely feral and are trying to establish a territory of their own--even going so far as to kill rivals and any cubs they find. The third one must be a new ally they picked up somewhere along the way. Some of my minions lost entire litters to them, not to mention the females were lured away so they could mate with them."

"But if they already have females, why would they try to take yours?" Cyclonus asked.

"Because there are other feral Sweeps that kill their cubs and steal away their females. What goes around comes around, I guess."

"And you've never tried regaining possession of any lost females?" Cyclonus pressed further.

"Can't," Scourge said flatly, "They're infected by some sort of nanoprobe that turns them feral. Unfortunately, it's transmissible during mating. If any of us mated with those females, we'd be infected too."

"I thought you said that the territory you marked would keep invaders out," Cyclonus said pointedly.

"That won't work if there are more of them than there are of us," Scourge told him.

They both returned to the den. The female looked at her mate in shock.

"What happened? It looks like you got attacked," she exclaimed.

"Yeah," Scourge replied, "I was jumped by three feral Sweeps. If it wasn't for Cyclonus, I would have been a goner."

Scourge's three cubs went up to their father, sensing his injuries. He lay down to rest for a bit and one of the cubs licked a tear on his arm that had been inflicted by one of his attacker's talons. Cyclonus entertained the other two cubs, dragging a bit of vine along the ground. The cubs chased and pounced on the "string" like a pair of kittens. Their reaction times were improving noticeably.

"It's time we headed back to Chaar," Cyclonus said presently.

"Those Sweeps that attacked me might come back," Scourge told his mate, "You should take the cubs and go to the safe place I showed you and sleep there tonight."

"Okay," she agreed.
