Meanwhile, on the other side of town . . .
A man stood inside a payphone booth. He hissed sourly into the receiver. “I don’t want to hear excuses. It must be found. The Master needs it to enter our world.”
“But sir . . .”
“I said no excuses! The signs say that it is to be revealed to you today! Find it or pay the ultimate price!” He slammed the phone down and stalked away.
On the other end, the young man swallowed hard and replaced the phone in its cradle. It took him three attempts because his hand shook so violently. He did not want to pay the ultimate price. He would have to find it. He crept back out of the office. He had to make his rounds. It had to be found.
