It was a warm, summer's day at Safety Patrol HQ. Ingrid was still out, recuperating from various mental and physical injuries, but she was going to make it with no lasting damage. Fillmore had gotten away with the four deaths - no proof.
The mood was sombre - O'Farrel had died one month ago this day. Nobody was in a joking mood. Tehama was still trying to hang off Fillmore. It was still futile. Anza still quietly watched his video.
Pushing the Hawaiin away, the former hunter turned to Vallejo. "Did we ever find where all that AV equipment came from?"
"Let it go, Fillmore. You knocked those guys off already. The score is settled." "That's not justice, dawg. You know it."
"All you can do."
"No. It's not enough."
"Deal with it."
"Never. Not after what he did."
Vallejo shrugged, walking away. He knew it was a hopeless argument. Fillmore fingered his gun, restless at his desk. His thoughts turned to a hospital, twelve blocks away, where Ingrid Third ran her lithe fingers through her short black hair, staring at the framed four of hearts on her bedside table.
