Shell Shock

Summary: I am drowning in a pool of hazy mist that coats a darkness over my eyes. A constant fog surrounds me. I feel as if I am hearing, seeing, speaking, all underwater. Somewhere submerged deep inside me something is screaming, hysterically crying, breaking, but it is so far down that I hardly notice. It is ever present, a nuisance to my hazy reality that annoys like a persistent gnat. Disturbing images plague my mind and memory, taunting in their familiarity... So I sleep.


----Igloo----

We moved to a new ice hut.

This igloo was larger than the last with heavy iron trunks along the perimeter and a wide red banner with a golden flame hanging from the wall and a large pile of furs. I didn't like the red.

I told Sokka I didn't like it. His face only twisted deeper in a scowl. He never smiled any more like I remembered, his face was always severe and harsh and there were dark circles around his eyes.

My voice rasped, hoarse and sore from disuse. I hardly spoke anymore, but I hurried to tell him that I liked the pelts. It was comforting to smell the familiar muskiness of the furs instead of the thick cloying incense that had permeated our last ice hut.

I let my heavy lids drift shut and and give into sleep's siren call.

I dream of a small boy with a slender neck supporting a large bare head. His spine was painted in blue that twisted down to his hands and came to an arrow point at his skull. He took my hand in his and we went penguin sledding.
