Chapter 4

When the guards brought Darcy back to the virtual meadow, Stormy was sitting on the shore of the lake with her sandals off and the hem of her robe hiked up, soaking her sore foot in the cool water. Icy was sitting reclined on a nearby boulder looking bored and irritable. Darcy took one look at the tableau and raised a curious eyebrow.

"Okay, what happened?"

Stormy just sat there glowering at the lake. Icy turned her gaze on Darcy and grinned.

"Right after you left Stormy's branch went missing. Turns out it wound up back on the tree, so Stormy went and kicked the tree."

Darcy winced sympatheticly.

"In sandals? Ouch."

The guard on Darcy's right pointed at Stormy.

"You, come with us. The doctor wants you to see the healers before we take you to see him."

Stormy's eyes went wide with surprise. She turned an accusing glare on Darcy.

"You told?"

Darcy shrugged indifferently as she strolled over to join the others.

"It came up. I happened to mention how you were climbing that tree and the branch you were on broke."

Icy grinned at the other two witches.

"Not exactly how I remember it. You should be thanking her Stormy. She got you an appointment to get patched up and kept you from sounding like a total moron in the process."

Stormy turned her glare on Icy.

"Hey, it wasn't me who said we ought to throw something at the ceiling to prove it's there."

Darcy crossed her arms and turned her back on Stormy.

"Actually it was. I just said it had to be there. And I'm not the one who said you ought to break off a tree branch to try it out."

Stormy glowered at Darcy's back.

"If I had my powers I would have just blasted that tree to splinters."

Darcy turned an ironic smirk on Stormy.

"If we had our powers we'd be out of here by now."

Icy held out one hand toward her sister witches in a stopping gesture while she rubbed her forehead with the other hand like she had a headache, an irritated scowl on her face.

"Let's not start that argument again. We already went over all that while Darcy was out."

Darcy glanced at Icy with a look of sudden comprehension.

"So that's why you two weren't speaking to each other when I got back."

The guard on the left cleared his throat.

"Come along Stormy. It's time to go visit the healers."

Darcy turned back to frown at the guards.

"Hey, don't forget about our pizza!"

Icy gave Darcy a surprised look.

"A pizza? How'd you manage to swing that?"

Stormy gave Darcy a taunting smirk.

"D'ya give the doc a blow job or something?"

Darcy glared back at Stormy.

"Like I'd stoop that low! He just asked if there was anything he could do to make our stay more comfortable and I asked for a pizza. Surprised me when he said yes. He even said we could have our choice of toppings."

Icy sat up straight on her boulder and grinned.

"Toldya the guy likes us. We'll have our pizza with pepperoni and olives."

Stormy whipped around to scowl at Icy.

"No way! I want peppers and anchovies!"

Icy pulled a face and shuddered.

"Ugh! How can you eat that stuff?"

Stormy leaned toward her with a challenging smile.

"You should try it. It's really good."

Icy closed her eyes and turned her head aside, nose up in the air with disdain.

"No thanks!"

Darcy leaned to the side and folded her arms over her chest.

"Well I want sausage and mushrooms."

This time it was Stormy's turn to pull a face.

"Ew, gross!"

Icy looked up at the sky.

"This always happens when we try to order a pizza. We can never agree on toppings and just wind up getting a plain cheese pizza."

Stormy screwed up her face in an angry pout and growled.

"Oooohh! This is so not fair!"

The guard on the right put his hand over his eyes.

"Look, we'll get you a combo pizza. That way you can each get the toppings you want. Now can we go already?"

Stormy slipped her sandals back on and stood up cautiously.

"Whatever. Let's just get this over with."

As she hobbled over to join the guards the one on the left commented to his companion.

"I'm telling ya, it's just like babysitting preschoolers."

Stormy railed on him furiously.

"I heard that! OW!!"

Icy squinched her eyes shut and put her face in her hand. Darcy winced and shook her head sadly.

"You'd think that girl would learn to stop kicking things while wearing sandals."

While the guards helped Stormy limp through the portal, muttering and cursing all the while, Icy put her arm lightly around Darcy's back and led her in the opposite direction.

"Never mind that. How was your session with the doc? Find out anything interesting?"

Darcy grinned.

"I sure did. Seems the good doctor was a patient here himself about fifteen years ago."

Icy glanced at Darcy with surprised interest.

"Oh really?"

Darcy nodded.

"That's what he told me. Said he had a rather bad attitude back then."

Icy raised a skeptical eyebrow at that.

"Dr. Thadeus Shreever with a bad attitude? I find that hard to imagine."

They passed through a small stand of trees, following the trail to a small pond set back a way from the portal and partially screened from view by the surrounding trees and bushes. It was the only place in the entire virtual meadow that offered any hint of privacy. None of the hologram people ever came here, adding to the illusion of this spot as a private sanctuary. Darcy sat down on a rock facing Icy.

"Well he did snap at me earlier when I took a look at his notes on you."

Icy leaned up against a tree and regarded Darcy with a look of interest.

"Oh really? So what does he think of me?"

Darcy grinned back at her sister witch.

"He thinks he can get inside your head if he keeps changing tactics until he finds something that works."

Icy returned Darcy's grin.

"Hah! He's certainly welcome to try. So how'd he take to you?"

Darcy's grin turned into a frown.

"I can't seem to get a reading on him yet. He keeps varying his reactions to the point where I can't even tell which ones are real. He's a lot slipperier than most of the goody-goods we run into. Maybe Stormy will have better luck. You know how she is. She's bound to get him mad sooner or later. People are a lot more likely to show their true selves when they get angry."

Icy leaned her head back against the tree and closed her eyes.

"Yeah, right. Like Stormy's gonna discover any of Dr. Shreever's deep, dark secrets before we do."

Darcy stood up with a shrug and stretched her arms up over her head.

"We'll see. Anyway, I'm ready for a bath now. Care to stick around and scrub my back for me?"

Icy's eyes flew open. Her heart skipped a beat before she realized this was just Darcy's teasing way of asking for privacy. She grinned at Darcy, giving a little wave as she turned to walk away.

"Nah. Maybe next time. The pond's all yours."

She started back along the path they had just walked together. A few seconds later she glanced back over her shoulder to make sure Darcy wasn't looking her way and quickly ducked behind a tree along the side of the trail. Peeking back around the tree, she was just in time to watch as Darcy grabbed the hem of her robe and pulled it up her body, over her head and off, leaving her bare from head to toe apart from the magic-suppressing headband. Icy stroked her crotch sensuously as she watched Darcy shake out her long, luxurious hair and wade into the cool water of the pond. Ducking back behind the tree so she wouldn't be seen, Icy closed her eyes and let out a soft moan of desire.

"Oh, Darcy. Not yet. Not quite yet, but someday. Someday you will be mine."
