Birth and Rebirth
PART 29
After the grueling battery of medications she received in her treatment regimen, Jessie’s condition had stabilized. She was awake and alert, prepared to deliver her children vaginally. Satisfied that the Kongs would be all right, Detective Frump quietly left the hospital to return to the precinct. He had checked in on them and gotten their statements. He would have to wait for Mrs. Kong’s statement. But that wasn’t a pressing matter anyway. There were a few psycho cultists that deserved his immediate ‘attention’. He smiled darkly at the prospect. It was gonna be a bad night to be a Cthulhu worshipper.
Dr. Barber told Jake that she’d seen few fighters like Jessica. Jake had joined her to coach her through the difficult birthing process, and she’d been given Pitocin to induce labor. Her contractions where coming frequently and her strength was returning, as Jake discovered the hard way.
Janine was passing by the O.R. on her way back from the restroom. Egon had suggested that she freshen up as not to scare the others. His colleagues were nearly as protective of her as he was, and he didn’t want them to make a scene over her tear-streaked face. As she walked past, Jake came running out of the operating room trailed by a metal tray, several very sharp surgical instruments, and a tirade of obscenities.
Janine’s eyes widened in alarm. “What on earth is going on in there?”
“She says it’s all my fault she’s in this condition, and threw me out of the operating room.” Despite the shoddy treatment from the woman he loved, Jake was all smiles. He fell into step with Janine. He decided that the diplomatic thing to do was to give his wife some space for a while.
“Well you don’t look too upset about being evicted from the birth of your kids.”
“It’s all about perspective, Janine.”
“Perspective, huh?” She grinned broadly up at him, thrilled beyond words that he was doing so much better.
“Yup. I’m just glad she’s still around to throw a tray of scalpels at me.”
When he and Janine entered the waiting area together, they were still laughing, to everyone’s delight.
