CHAPTER 3:
INTERMISSION 1: SETTING THE BAR
“…And that was my ‘after prom party’.” Babs said; taking an immodest bow to the genuine applause from Fifi and Shirley. “Thank you. Thank you. You’re all too kind.”
Fifi giggled as she fanned herself. “A wonderful story Babs.” she said, “Romantic, playful and just ze ‘int of romance.” Fifi’s face then sank into a disappointed pout. “But ‘eet is not fair to leave out ze juiciest part.”
Shirley nodded in agreement. “With you there Fifi. Like-what’s with the blackout Babs?”
”Well a girl’s entitled to keep a few secrets to herself.” Babs said, giving a playful wink to her friends. “Besides if I told you, you’d never look at Buster with a straight face again. So much rug-burn.”
“Okay, like, now I really want to know.” Shirley said.
Babs turned a serious eye to Shirley. “No crystal ball stuff Shirl. I’m serious.”
“Okay, deal. No crystal ball stuff or may I spend my next four lives as-”
“—Gilbert Godfried.” Babs said. She couldn’t resist a cheeky grin as what little colour there was, drained from Shirley’s face.
“Zhat is, ‘ow you say, cruel and unusual" said Fifi.
“Like-totally, but I swear. No crystal ball stuff.”
Babs pulled out a list, written in impeccable legalese, from which she quoted, “…Or seance inquisitions, familiar questioning, tarot cards, palm reading—”
“Ba-a-bs…” Both Shirley and Fifi frowned.
“Too far?” asked Babs as she sheepishly tore up the legal document.
“Too far.” Shirley and Fifi replied.
Eyes then turned to Shirley.
“Well duck, you gonna show your hand?” Babs said with a playful poke. The wicked grin Shirley flashed in return surprised both Babs and Fifi.
“Oooh I think Shirley has a good story for us Babs.” Fifi said; all a titter with excitement.
“Grab a fan girls, you’re gonna need them after this one.”
“Ooh. Big talk. Let’s hope you can back it up.” said Babs.
“You two are really in to ze story telling today.“ said Fifi with just a touch o suspicion in her voice.
Shirley began. “*ahem* So-like there we were…”
