chapter 25

He knew that avoiding her all day was a bad idea, but the need to protect her was so strong he knew he wouldn’t leave if he went to her room. Letting her rest for the day would be best for them both or at least that’s what he thought at first. Having Alexander round on him the moment they were alone together later that night nearly panicked him enough to storm her room right away. Instead, he decided it was time for the boy to learn healing magic.

“Is she sleeping?” Puck watches Alexander moving swiftly towards him as he leans against a tree in the solarium.

“Finally.” Alexander frowns and kicks at a rock. “Explain to me again why she has to be asleep.”

Puck sighs, waving his hand and transporting them into Eve’s room. He walks over and checks to make sure she is deeply asleep. “This type of healing can be very distressing to a human. I will be showing you how to repair the damage and take away the swelling. If she were to be awake during this, the pain and sensation of things moving in her head would drive her crazy.”

Alexander pales, suddenly understanding what he plans to do. “Oh.” He thinks for a moment. “Will I have to do anything?”

Puck settles down on the bed next to her, laying his hand gently on her forehead. “She has been teaching you to see the magic around you. Use that to help yourself see the way I use magic to repair the damage. This is too delicate for you to do right away.” His hand starts to glow softly as he begins. “Watch and learn.”

Two hours pass before he finally pulls his hand away, exhaustion nearly overtaking him. Alexander kneels nest to him, concerned. Puck waves him away and stands. “It’s nothing a little rest cannot fix, Boy. I may be old but I am not so old as to exhaust myself needlessly.” He looks down at her and brushes a stray hair from her face. “I repaired the worst and left the rest for later. It is amazing she is not in worse shape. The venom did more damage than first believed.”

“What now?” Alexander hides a smile at Puck’s tender gesture towards her.

“Now we rest.” Puck turns and light raps him on the shoulder. “Take us back to the solarium. There’s more for you to learn before this night is out!”

“Yes, Uncle.” Alexander grins and with a snap of his fingers they disappear from her room.
