Two Weeks Later
Closing the door behind him, Double D stepped off his front step, his messenger bag grasped tightly at his side.
"Eddward!" a deep voice called out through the summer air.
Edd looked around him, confused by the direction of the voice.
"Hello?" he replied, his eyes darting around for the source.
"Over here," said the voice with a hint of amusement.
Double D followed the sound. He took a sharp intake of breath as he saw his new neighbour. He was leaning against a column on his porch, arms crossed against his chest.
"Oh," Edd stuttered, "H-Hello."
He turned to leave, but the boy called him back. Unable to resist a command made by anybody, Double D obediently approached him. Edd could feel himself shaking slightly as the other male spoke.
"I've heard that you're the person with the highest intelligence around here."
Double D blushed with pride.
"Thank you," he responded politely.
"I assume you play chess then?" the dark teen said, pushing himself away from the column with his foot.
"Yes," Edd answered, "Of course. But," his expression fell, "No one around here knows how to play."
"Well, there is now," the boy revealed, a small grin on the corner of his mouth.
"You play?!" Double D asked excitedly, immediately perking up at the news.
"Yeah," he replied, brushing a lock of dark hair out of his face.
"I haven't played against another human being for years!" Edd exclaimed, feeling giddy.
"Wanna come in and play a game?" he offered coolly.
Double D considered it, looked at his bag clutched at his side, and said sadly,
"No, I shouldn't. I'd love to, but I have to go meet Eddy."
"Alright," the teen said, blinking, and looked away, "Come back later then."
"Okay," Edd responded brightly. Grinning, he waved and started to walk away.
The other teen smiled knowingly as Double D swiftly turned around, saying,
"I'm sorry. I just realized that I don't know your name."
"Well, that's because I never told you," the mysterious boy said as he cleared the gap between Edd and himself.
Surprisingly, Double D didn't feel the slightest bit uncomfortable by this breach of personal space.
The dark teen put himself at face level with Edd, his pitch black hair falling around his face in a menacing curtain. With his face dangerously close to Double D's, the taller boy pressed his black lips to Edd's pale pink ones. The shorter teen remained motionless as the other boy broke the kiss, whispering,
"It's Joey."
Double D gasped lightly as Joey backed away.
The taller boy was at his doorstep before he asked,
"Still on for that chess game?"
Edd nodded his head numbly, gulping hard.
A smirk played across Joey's face as we watched Double D stumble across the street to Eddy's house.
