Breakfast was an easy going affair. With Jack out cold, the trio of Danny, Jazz and Maddie could speak openly about things that they normally couldn't. The topic of the day: what Jack was working on and how it would effect them.

“I'd guess that Dad's working on a new ghost detector after all the others detected me...” Danny said, before spearing a piece of sausage on his fork and consuming it.

“That reminds me...” Maddie injected, “We still need to find a way to get your father out of the lab so we can make a work around to deal with that problem.”

“Yeah, that would help a lot...” Jazz replied. “But why is Dad getting so secretive lately.”

“Well, after learning of Danny's condition I started slowing down the progress on some of our more successful designs.” Maddie admitted. “Just until we can put in the updated protocol...”

“You've been sabotaging the new designs?” Danny added with a raised eyebrow.

“Just until I'm sure they won't be able to hurt you...” Maddie said, “I certainly didn't expect this kind of situation when I first designed the equipment.”

“None of us would have been able to know what was coming.” Danny replied. “Despite our history with the strange and the bizarre.”

“Well, now that we're all on the same page we should be able to work something out...” Jazz said, then with a sigh added, “...but we're eventually going to talk to Dad about this situation.”

“Yeah... I never thought I'd say this but...” Danny said defeated, “It looks like telling Dad about being half ghost is going to be the EASY part.”

“We'll deal with THAT hurdle if and when we get to it...” Maddie said, “To think a one night stand with the ghost boy could turn into this...”

'To say the least...' Danny thought to himself. Things had taken a turn for the strange but not unpleasant after the incident at the excavation site...

'What happened there?' His thoughts continued. After hearing that DALV, the human branch of Vlad's considerable bi worldly influence, had moved into a dig site the day it was discovered he had been suspicious. Especially since he had more or less kicked out the original diggers as soon as they found something. He dropped in after the work crew had called it a night and found a really weird... vault he would like to call it. There were a lot of odd drawings and writings he couldn't decipher on it, but it seemed oddly entrancing. He remembered touching the unusually warm door and then... nothing.

'That's when everything started to change...' Danny repeated a realization he had made a long time ago. After waking up in his bed wondering what the hell had just happened before attempting to pass it off as a bad dream...

Feeling washed and refreshed after a shower the now clothed Danny made his way down to the kitchen in the hope of getting breakfast before he had to leave school. The sounds of work wafting up from the lab was more then enough to tell him he had to fend for himself today.

The sight that greeted him as he entered the kitchen was Jazz sitting up at the table reading a newspaper with the headline 'EXCAVATION SITE VANDALIZED!'

“So it wasn't a dream...” Danny said to himself, a little too loudly. Jazz looked up at him from the newspaper.

“What wasn't a dream?” She asked curiously. After receiving a non-committal sound from Danny she briefly returned to her reading. After a few moments she lowered the newspaper again to look at Danny sit with a bowl of cereal.

“What?” Danny asked after being stared at for a few moments. Jazz seemed to snap out of her stare with a start.

“Nothing...” she replied, “You just seem... different somehow.”

“Different?” Danny said with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah...” Jazz said, “But I can't seem to put my finger on why...”

“Whatever...” Danny replied before returning to his breakfast. After a few moments of continued glances from his sister he was about to speak again when Maddie entered the room.

“Hey kids...” She called in a tired voice. After receiving a couple of 'good mornings' from her children she made a bee line to the coffee machine. She started a new pot before giving out a yawn. Her eyes wandered the room for a moment while waiting for the coffee to get ready. Eventually her gaze fell firmly upon her son and remained there.

“Mom?” Danny asked, breaking his mother's focus on him. “Is there something on my face or something?”

“No no...” Maddie said with a smile. “I was just noticing how much you've grown recently.”

“Uh... thanks. I guess...” Danny replied. He had been gaining more height recently and his 'hobby' kept him in shape. After a few moments of silence Jazz stood up before addressing Danny.

“Time to head to school...” Jazz said, “Want a ride?”

“Yeah, thanks.” Danny replied, glad that he didn't need to ride the bus nor expose himself to the ghost hunters who had discovered his habit of flying to school. He got up and briefly disappeared upstairs to gather his books. On his way back down he stopped to say good bye to his mom.

“Later, Mom.” Danny said as he noted that Jazz had already headed out to her car. Pausing briefly, he stopped before his mother and acted on impulse by giving her a chaste kiss on the cheek. Only after the series of events that followed did he understand that this event was the spark that ignited the wildfire in his mother. He left, not seeing her raising a shaking hand to where he had kissed her...

“Danny?” Maddie asked, breaking him out of his memories. He shook his head slightly, trying to clear the fog that had passed over it.

“Yeah?” Danny replied, not sure how long he'd been unaware. Considering his position it was dangerous to let that happen.

“You were zoning out for a minute there...” Jazz said, concern in her voice. “Are you alright?”

“Yeah...” Danny said, “I guess I just got lost in my memories...”

“Well, it's time for you two to head to school.” Maddie said, noticing the time.

“Yeah, let's go.” Jazz said, standing up gathering her bag. Danny stood up shortly afterwards with his own bag.

“Goodbye, Mom.” He said, before placing an innocent kiss on her cheek.

“Bye!” Jazz said, before heading out the door with Danny.

“Have a nice day!” Maddie called out after them, before touching her cheek. An innocent, chaste kiss from a son to a mother...

...except to those who understood what it really meant.
