Disclaimer: I do not have anything to do with Kim Possible, I don't own it I just watch it. If you own it I am not even sure if I even wrote this story.

Note: ok here is a long chapter. Sorry but it looks like this story is going to be a slow burner. If you want to read just about sex I can point you to some really good stories but it doesn't look like there will be any here for some time. Sorry that just the way Kim is telling the story. Thank you for taking the time read, your e-mails and comment are welcome.

Farther along we'll understand why

Kim felt like she was underwater but this liquid seemed to be very thick, more like miniral oil. She could see the surface shimmered and wavered above her as she rose. It felt like she was constantly about to surface but, as the distance to the light got shorter she moved slower and slower. She fought to swim faster but he body was moving so slow, it seemed like forever. Kim's eyes slowly open and she tried in vein to focus on where she was. Her body hurt like never before. Just breathing felt like a struggle and when she tried to move her finger it felt like she was trying to lift a car.

Her eyes finally adjusted to the dim light of the room she was in. She knew she was in a hospital room at her mother's hospital but every surface was covered in flowers, hundreds of them, it looked like she was in a garden. She could see her mother sitting across the room reading a book by the light of a small lamp. Kim opened her mouth with great effort and called to her mother but no real words came out. He mouth was so dry all she could manage was a gravely moan.

"Kimmy your finally awake" he mother said as she put the book down and walked to Kim's beside. Kim's only response was to croak again struggling to get any words out. "Wait" her mother said as she adjusted the bed so that Kim was sitting up. Reaching for a glass of water her mother said "Drink this dear", holding the glass up to Kim's lips. Kim gulped at the water as if she had been in a desert for day. "Slow down, drink it too fast and you will get cramps, you have been out for 24 hours," her mother said as Kim reach up to take the glass from her mother. "24 hours??? What happened???" Kim started but then she felt terror grip her mind. "Ron!! Where's Ron!!" Kim said as she tried to rise unsuccessfully.

Kim's mother gently eased her back down onto the bed saying "we can talk about Ron in a little while but first we need to talk about you". "You had a very bad day didn't you? I'm sorry I had you sedated but I thought you were goning to hurt yourself" her mother continued, her voice more full of sympathy than anger. Kim's mind tumbled back to the cells, the image on Ron on the floor, the fire fighters. Then she remembered the ambulance ride and how she treated the EMT and the nurse. It seems so long ago and the memories kept moving too fast, just as he mind grasped at one another would flash in. Finally she remembered that she had said she wanted to kill Drakken. Kim hung her head and said, "mom I am so sorry", she could not bring herself to look at her mother. Gently taking Kim's chin in her hand she lifter her daughter face untill she could see in her eyes and said "we are not mad at you."

"We saw the whole thing. The police searched the room and found a videotape that had everything on it. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been," her mother explained. "Everyone is very proud of you, you did everything right, better than most professionals could have given the circumstances" she continued. "Except I hurt an EMT and a nurse......... and Ron" Kim cut in holding back tears. "Honey the Ambulance crew can take it, they have seen worse and besides they know you didn't mean it" her mother said patting Kim's hand, "As for the nurse, Tom was more embarrassed than hurt. He said that he had never been thrown buy anyone, never mind a teenage girl, and he use to be a body guard." "And you did not hurt Ron, Drakken did" her mother said a little more forcefully.

"Ron should not have been there, I should not let him come with me," Kim said still feeling responsible. "Kimmy listen to me" her mother said, "Ron wanted to go, and he loves helping you. I don't think you could have stopped him even if you wanted to." Kim knew it was true, they were a team, together they could do anything, almost. Kim was battling with her emotions, she knew her mother was right but she could not shake the feeling of guilt. The room was silent. Kim just sat in the bed, her mother holding her hand, she was not sure what to say, what to think. She always knew the right thing to do but for the fist time she was lost. Finally she asked the question she dreaded the most, "is Ron ok?"

"We can talk about Ron soon" he mother replied, "but first we need to talk about what you said you were going to do to Drakken." Kim remembered, she was going to go find Drakken and kill him, she still wanted to. Kim had never felt such hatred for anyone before in her life, but how could she not; he tried to take Ron from her. "Is Ron mine?" she asked herself. Her mother could see the confusion of emotions play across her daughter face. "Kim do you know why your father and I let you go out and these missions?" her mother asked her. Kim realized that she really never thought about it, it was just something she did. Normal parents would never let their daughter go happily off into danger. Kim could only shake her head. "We let you go because we know how many people need you. You have a gift for helping people, just like your father and I do" her mother explained. "All these flowers are from people you helped. There are more in the hallway and in every other room in the hospital. So many keep coming in that we started sending them out the nursing homes. There isn't a florist in fifty miles that has any flower left" her mother continued. "We let you go out because you play by the rules, even if the people you stop don't. You play by the rules and never take credit for what you have done. Anyone else would let it go to there head, you don't, you keep your humility" her mother finished.

Kim knew her mother was right, she did play by the rules no matter what. She knew that that was a big reason why people called on her, weather it was just everyday people, the police or even governments, they knew she would do the right thing regardless of the circumstances. She could never really kill Drakken out of hate, that would just be letting everyone down and it would make her as bad as he was. Knowing this she still could not shake the need to make Drakken hurt, and hurt bad. "Kim, its not what you think, its what you do that matters" her mother said, as if reading her daughters mind.

"Ron is in the next room" her mother started to say. Kim sat and listen, not sure she really wanted to know after all. "We are keeping him asleep for now while we decide what to do next. Physically he is fine, he is breathing on his own and all his bodily functions are normal," her mom continued starting to take on a clinical tone. "Ron's brain is another thing" her mother said gripping Kim's hand tightly. The words made her cringe, what good was a body if Ron wasn't in there. Kim could feel her eyes start to cloud with tears. "Wait Kimmy, let me finish" her mother said trying to reassure her. "His brain cells are intact but some of the connections between them are not. Fortunately Drakken's neurotoxin was not nearly as strong as he was led to believe and they think they can reverse the damage." He mother finished.

"They? You're not treating him?" Kim could again feel anger start to rise inside her. "Kim you know I can't, it's not ethical and besides it is not my area of expertise. When the word went out about what happened to Ron the hospital was flooded with calls from experts that know you both and want to help. We now have the world's finest team of neurosurgeons here just to help Ron. The center shut down and you father and all the other scientists are helping. They think they can help by using nano-bots to deliver stem cells to the damaged connection. Even you friend Wade is helping and for some reason he wanted Ron's mole rat with him. You father has you communicator and is working almost nonstop with Wade." He mother said with a pride. Kim could only imagine Rufus, Wade and her father slaving, trying to help Ron. She knew her mother was right and if anyone could help Ron they could. "Do you want to go see him now?" he mother asked. Kim could only nod.

With a little help from her mother Kim got into fresh cloths and, holding her mother hand, left the room. The two were in a dead end hallway that was full of fragrant flowers of all kinds, there were two double doors at the end of the hall. Beside the door were two uniformed police officers. Kim stopped and looked at her mother. "The police department insisted, so many people were trying to see the two of you we had to do something," her mother explained. As the two approached the door to Ron's room it opened and Ron's mother and father exited. Kim immediately felt terrified and hid behind her mother like a toddler afraid of strangers. Kim's mother stopped but did not force her daughter back; Kim just pressed her head into her mothers back.

"Kim is that you" Mrs. Stopible called out to her. Kim could not move, she was frozen with terror. As if talking to a young child Ron's mother said, "We are glad to see you up, we were worried about you." "How could they even care about me after what she had done to Ron?" was all Kim could think. "Kimmy, come out here, were not going to hurt you" Mr. Stopible said quietly. Kim inched out from behind her mother and in the quietest of voices said, "I'm sorry for what I did to Ron." Taking Kim's face in her hands Ron's mother said "you didn't do anything to Ron." "But if he wasn't with me........." she started, only to be cut of by Mrs. Stopible pulling her into a hug. "Kimmy, Kimmy, Kimmy" Mrs. Stopible hugged Kim into her chest. "Ron wanted to be with you." "All he ever talk about is going out on missions with you and it breaks his heart when he has to stay home. Nothing he ever does comes close to bring him the joy that he gets when he is with you" she cooed, "He loves you more that anything."

Ron loved her? Was Mrs. Stopible talking about friendship or something more? Kim wasn't sure but she was sure that she never wanted Ron to be away from her again. "We were just going to temple, why don't you go see him," Mr. Stopible said, gently urging his wife away. Ron parents smiled so lovingly at Kim as they left that Kim started to tear up. "Let go see Ron dear" her mother said guiding her toward the door.

The instant Kim saw Ron she turned back and buried her face in her mother's chest. It was too much, she could barley see him with all the tubes and monitors. It was like the scene from a bad horror move and Kim just sobbed as her mother held her and stroked her hair. "Kimmy, it ok" her mother whispered, "all that stuff is just there to watch him, that's all". Kim swallowed hard and then looked back at Ron. No it was way too much, in that instant her mind told her she needed to fight or run, the impulse to run won the battle. Kim tore herself away from her mother and was out the door in an instant. Kim's mother made it into the hallway just in time to see her daughter slam through the dubble doors and sprint down the hall. The police were confused and about to chase after her when Mrs. Possible stopped them, "not let her go, she needs to be alone."

Kim ran like the devil himself was chasing her. The sky was pitch black and there wasn't a soul on the streets. She just kept running, she had to get away, it was all a bad dream and if she ran fast enough and far enough it would all end. She finally started to slow when he adrenalin petered out. Kim was in park breathing heavy when she heard music, very slow sad music. Without her permission her body moved toward the sound. It was country music and it was telling a sad tail of lost love. Kim stopped right in front of a little group of musicians that look as thought they came straight from the Ozark Mountains. The band had obviously been playing all night, a hat in front of them was filled with money people had tossed into it.

"We've been waiting on you" an very old man with a long beard said to her as he leaned on his guitar. "Waiting for me?" Kim said confused, there was no way they knew she was going to be here. "Sure, every musician waits for a soul that needs a song, and you defiantly look like a soul in need a song" the old man said, look at Kim with eyes that could have been a thousand years old. "No I'm fine" Kim protested. "Mmm fine, I see, well then you won't mind lending us you ear for a spell," the man said gesturing for Kim to sit and listen. Kim sat and rested her back against a tree across from the band. "You know, music has a way as saying some things that the heart can't" the man said as he started to play a sad tune on his guitar. Kim drew her knees up to her chest, wrapped her arms around her legs and hinding most of her face in her lap so they could only see her eyes.

The musicians played to the night.

I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than to be home alone
Knowing that you gone
Would cause me to lose my mind

So blow your whistle freight train
Take me far on down the track
I'm going away, I'm leaving today
I'm going, but I ain't coming back

I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than to be in some big city
In a small room, with you on my mind

So blow your whistle freight train
Take me far on down the track
I'm going away, I'm leaving today
I'm going, but I ain't coming back

So blow your whistle freight train
Take me far on down the track
I'm going away, I'm leaving today
I'm going, but I ain't coming back

The song didn't end, the other musician played softer as the old man looked at Kim and said "Now that wouldn't be what you heart is sayin would it be little miss." Kim just shook her head no, she knew it was but she wasn't going to admit it. The old man just smiled gently at Kim and said, "No, I don't reckon it is." The man paused for a moment then said, "you know, music can heal too and if that were what you heart was sayin, I know a song you can sing back to it." The tune the band played changed a little and the old man sung.

Tempted and tried were oft me to wonder
Why it should be thus, all the daylong
When there are others living about us
Never molested or in wrong

Farther along we'll know all about it
Farther along we'll understand why
Cheer up my sister, live in the sunshine
We'll understand it all by and by

The band continued to play as the old man lean over to speak to Kim. "Do you understand the words?" he asked her. Kim wasn't sure, she thought she did. Some people never got a break, never got to live a worry free life. That was her, she was always taking on the world, she was the one always being tried. The other people were the people she helped, they people she helped to live in the sunshine. She understood, it wasn't up to her, this was what was placed on her plate, she could not change it, it was who she was. There were thing she knew were out of her hands and maybe someday she would understand why it all happened.

The old man spoke up again. "Now you don't look like a little lady that runs from a fight", Kim could only nod. "Well I don't think you really want to be running now, do you?" he asked. Kim nodded again. "Well then go on back, fight the fight and win" the man said as he reached behind his guitar case and offered Kim a CD. Kim stood and took it, then started to reach in her pocket for some money. The old man snatched the hat away before she could toss her money in. "No missy, that for people that hear to our music, we don't charge for the people that listen to it" the old man said. "No go on git, we don't got no more music for you, go back to where you came from and fight the good fight" he finished, and then started back playing his guitar, ignoring Kim entirely.

As Kim started to walk back to the hospital she could hear them playing and singing the same passage again. Farther along she would know why. She just had to keep being who she was. That's what Ron would want, and she would never let him down again. She was going to stay by his side until he was better; she knew he would come back to her. Wiping the tears from her eyes she clutched the CD and walked with a new strength, bolstered by the music.

When there are others living about us
Never molested or in wrong
