On Professor Membrane's voicemail, Megami left the most generic absence excuse she could think of. Something akin to "I regret to inform you that I cannot attend work today due to a tummy ache..." Without even giving thought to where she might be going, Megami slipped out of her bedroom window with GIR tucked deep into her--er, Dib's--trenchcoat. The little robot squealed with delight and kicked its feet.

She eventually ended up at ther "spot," as always. It was perfection for her because it afforded an advantageous view of all Nirvana's goings-on while still giving her ample privacy. The little rocky overlook at the base of Myrnna Mountain was difficult to get to for most; luckily Megami had an extra set of arms to assist in her climbing.

She was lost in her revelry for a bit, wondering about a plethora of things. First and foremost was, as usual, her uncle Dib. Why didn't Gaz and Papaw ever speak of him? There was almost anger and bitterness in Gaz's eyes as she described his death... That didn't really make Meg believe it hurt to think of him... To be hurt by someone's death, you would have to feel fondness for them and Meg didn't detect any fondness for Dib at all!

Despite the fact that Dib was a hero, information about him was scarce aside from rumor. Maybe they WERE ashamed of him... There was a popular legend that Dib had, in fact, fallen in love with an Irken in his youth. Some had said that he destroyed the Irken race because (aside from decimating the Earth, that is) this particular alien he loved had spurned his affections. Nobody ever talked about Dib when Meg was around, however. No way they would risk being punished for spreading salacious rumors by Membrane.

If the rumors were true, and Dib had indeed come to love a filthy Irken, then Professor Membrane would definitely want to keep that kind of thing a secret...

Meg sighed in frustration. Why couldn't anything be simple? She wanted to just be given a good reason for not being able to become a Razier. She wanted to know why Gaz hated Dib. She was sick of being left in the dark.

So often at nights she dreamt of him. She was but an infant, and he was holding her in his strong arms, laughing as she pulled at his hair. She wanted to be him so badly, even her subconscious was torturing her. If they had ever met, she was sure that they would have been great friends...

"Look! Look!" GIR cried, pointing at the horizon. The Razier's ships were landing. Meg sat up on her knees, shading her eyes from the sun in order to get a better look. Shortly, she was able to discern that Papaw Membrane was right... they HAD captured some Irkens. A whole mess of them.

At the forefront, escorted by no less than four guards, was a tall (for an Irken), somber-looking creature that she surmised must be the infamous "Irken Prince." He didn't look like a typical bugger, really. He carried himself with a certain dignity, a smug expression glancing across his bright red eyes as he took in his surroundings. Unlike the rags most Irkens wore, he was outfitted in a suit of fine biomechanical armor. While most of their Paks were typically used only for self preservation, she saw that his was much larger and more elaborate; it covered the entire upper lumbar region of his back, and was in three joined segments.

"HI!" GIR bellowed, cupping his little metal hands around his mouth. Megami quickly rushed to shush him, covering his face completely. The group was just about to enter the alcove between the mountains and Gaftar prison; it was unlikely that they would be heard, but she didn't care to be shot out of the air as a suspected spy.

The Prince's other companions weren't nearly as well-kempt as he. The rest of the Irkens were just as crazy and filthy as the other buggers Meg had previously witnessed being captured.

Studying the Prince again as their group nearly passed beneath the cliff, Meg felt a strange thrill run up her spine. His stark difference from the others piqued her curiousity. Why was he so civil? So tall, so muscular, so... humanoid?

And he was looking at her.

Megami's stomach dropped to her knees. Did he really see her up here, some 75 feet above the ground? Without knowing where to look? She let GIR back down beside her and his antennae prickled. He DID see her.

Gasping, she rolled back away from the cliff until her wings were crushed against the rock wall.

His eyes...

...were so TIRED. His spirit had been broken a long time ago.

"I think it's time we go home, GIR."

"Awwww!" he pouted as she pulled him into her arms and stumbled down the side of the cliff opposite the Raziers, which was a little more perilous. Dib's trenchcoat inhibited her wings a bit, but she was able to flutter down to the ground with only marginal difficulty.

She didn't want to return home, but she knew she had to. It was difficult to convince her feet to obey her, though... So a walk that would have normal taken a half hour stretched into nearly 90 minutes. As she passed a hot dog stand a girl stopped her and cooed over GIR.

"That is such an AWESOME toy robot!" the girl cried. "Where did you get it?"

Shrugging absently, Megami replied, "I don't know, I've had it since I was a baby."

"Oh..." the girl whispered sadly. "From Earth?" she cautioned to ask, not knowing that Megami had never seen the place.

"Probably not," Megami sighed, abruptly turning away from the girl and walking off. She had too many questions of her own; she didn't need to be given MORE. GIR had always been there; she didn't even stop to think about where he'd come from. Was he something from her parents, maybe? She couldn't recall if Valerie had ever stated such a thing.

"Maybe I should go to the bar," Megami murmured, looking at the shield rising in the distance. The streets were rapidly emptying; no doubt the bar would be empty about now... Everyone would be home watching the newsnets, absorbing everything they could about the latest Irken captures. Ultimately, she decided that Papaw would be angry enough with her for skipping work and meandered home before suncover.

The Prince's eyes... They bothered her. Why, she couldn't quite understand. The Irkens were horrific killing machines that had destroyed Earth. They deserved the worst. And yet.. She PITIED him, didn't she? Felt he didn't belong there, at the Razier's mercy.

He had looked at her. With those EYES. And she had crumbled. Maybe she DIDN'T have what it took to be a Razier.

If Dib had really fallen in love with an Irken... Maybe she had looked at him with eyes like that too.

Megami shook her head incredulously as she crawled back into her window and lay GIR upon her bed. That was all bullshit. A man of esteem and good repute like DIB, from a family as famous and brilliant as the MEMBRANES... He would never soil his hands with an IRKEN! Never.

"I'm going to go get some crackers for us. Be good for me, okay?"

GIR nodded enthusiastically, thrilled there were crackers in his imminent future.

As she tiptoed down the hallway toward the kitchen, she was stopped at the noise of a choked hiccup. With the Raziers returning and the work day about over, she should have expected everyone to be home... but Meg still jumped in surprise.

Valerie was crying. The action was so rare for her that Meg leaned her antennae as close to the door of the den as she dared.

"I can't do this anymore. I'm sick of hiding the truth from her!"

Gaz's voice was low and harsh. "It's for her own good, Valerie. She's grown up HATING Irkens..."

"Because of US!"

Megami wondered if they were talking about HER. They had to have been... Everyone else in the colony, except those who were her age and younger, had witnessed the fall of Earth with their own eyes and hated the Irkens for their own reasons. And they instilled that hatred in their OWN kin.

"Calm down, Valerie," Gaz said in a firm voice. She heard them embrace. "Meg's at a tumultuous age-- she wants to rebel... In a couple of years she'll find out what she REALLY wants to do with her life. And I don't think Raziering will be it."

"She's wanted to be a Razier since she was 12."

Gaz laughed. "The girl can barely coordinate her arms to bake a cake. Once the part of her brain that dictates common sense grows in, she'll realize what a retarded idea this is."

Megami couldn't help but be offended. She had been practicing martial arts in secret since she was 14... Once Valerie disclosed that Dib knew some karate, she was obsessed with becoming a master... But she was a tad clumsy.

"You don't get the point of this discussion," Valerie sniffled. "She despises Irkens. She wants them all dead for what they did to Dib. Maybe she hates them more than the majority of US..."

"She's a baby, Val. Every emotion she feels is intense. Give her feelings some time to settle."

"But what if someone KNOWS?! Or figures it out?!"

"Nobody will figure it out. You're overreacting."

"Her Irken features are entirely too prominent, Gaz..."

Waitaminnut! IRKEN features??!

"So she's got antennae and green skin. That's where the similarities end."

...IRKEN FEATURES...???

"We have to tell her she has Irken blood, Gaz!"

There you have it. In plain enough words.

Irken blood. She was IRKEN.

IRKEN.

She was a BUGGER.

Bile jumped ino her throat and she staggered. Everything made so much sense now...

"Oh... Oh god..." she stumbled backward and took one step, two... three... then she ran full tilt back to her room, where she just managed to make it to her trash can before heaving directly into it.

Nothing came out. She hadn't eaten a bite since the bread that morning. But the heaves still came, until saliva and foamy pink blood spattered agains the wads of paper at the bottom of the can.

After a full five minutes of attempting to vomit, her exhausted body finally gave up and she collapsed on the floor, coughing.

GIR kneeled before her, laughing. "What game are we playing??" he cried, poking her nose.

"This is no game, GIR," she groaned. "Leave me alone." With that, she crawled to her bed and curled up aginst the wall, ordering the computer to turn out the lights.

"Awwwww.... Bedtime already?"

Digging her fingers into the soft material of Dib's trenchcoat that she was still clad in, Meg finally let the tears come. She was an Irken. Now she understood. They never told her about Dib because... Well, he had killed her people. He had brought about the end of the Irken race, but they had killed him in the process. Telling her about him would have made her hatred of the Irkens all the more intense... Because she idolized him. She always had.

But if she was of Irken blood, why did the Membrane family take her in? Maybe they pitied her. She obviously wasn't of FULL Irken descent. Maybe her family's ship had been shot down near their colony...

But how did they know she was Irken if she had just landed in their laps?? She highly doubted there was a note pinned to her coat reading, "Please take care of our Irken child..."

What if the Raziers had actually captured her family? What if she was pulled from her mother's arms while soldiers beat her father senseless...? If Valerie had said, "Sure, I'll take her. I don't have any kids of my own anyway..."

It wasn't broadcasted but Meg was smart enough to deduce that Valerie and Gaz were more than friends and always had been. If Valerie knew her relationship with Gaz would endure, of course she could never naturally have a child of her own.

Megami cringed to think of her poor parents, rotting away in a cell at the bottom of Gaftar, pining for their poor child and wondering what had happened to her... Dying alone and afraid without answers...

...if they were dead at all.

It wasn't a practice among the citizens of Nirvana to execute prisoners. Torture and inhumane experimentation was (secretly) conducted often. But execution? They weren't BARBARIANS!

Another fine shudder went through Megami's body. Suddenly, there was an all-too-human face on these creatures she had been raised to hate. The Prince's eyes were staring at her again.. They were "inhuman" in the literal sense. They could do little other than stutter and stumble without their precious Paks... But she knew they felt pain and sadness. She knew that, in some rare cases, they could think for themselves.

Those eyes...

"...Megami, sweetheart?" The voice was barely above a whisper. She did nothing to acknowledge she heard Valerie's voice. "Did you just get home, honey? Papaw said you had a tummy ache."

Still no answer.

"Would you like me to fix you some soup?"

Finally she found her voice. "I just want to be left alone... Valerie."

Megami had never called Val by her given name. Drawing a steadying breath, the human whispered, "Please, Meggy... Don't be angry with us. We just want what's best for you. You understand that, don't you?"

"Please. Just leave me alone."

Trying to stifle a sob, Valerie finally pulled the door to and left Meg alone. GIR, who could, remarkably, sense Meg's hurt and anger, stayed quiet. Somberly, he climbed upon the bed and curled up into the small of her back.

Sometimes she could swear that her childhood TOY was the only "living" creature that knew or cared about how she felt. A sob involuntarily jumped from her throat and she burrowed her head into her arms.

David had cared.

She had been so distraught about that kiss... And then the next day it had hit her... Humans have so much water in their saliva... That's why it had burned. For the next week she tripled the dosage of her water immunity pills. Though she was frequently nauseous and her mouth dry, when the next Friday rolled around she kissed David the minute he came to pick her up for their date. And she felt more wonderful than ever.

Water burns Irken skin.

How come she never put 2 and 2 together? To eat the same food as her human family she had to pop pills on a daily basis... But she never gave it a single thought.

"I'm sure everything will be fine," David had quietly reassured her. And she believed him. She had found a perfect medium with her pill dosage soon afterward, and she could kiss David all she wanted without sacrificing her health. She never told anyone what she had been doing; it wasn't any of their business and nobody asked.

If there were any problems she would be able to fix them. She had done her homework. Her anatomy was almost totally the same as a human's as far as that was concerned. They were sexually compatible.

"It's exactly the same as a human female," David had sheepishly pointed out as he probed her.

Megami giggled. "And how many human females have you seen down there?"

"I've seen-- pictures..." he answered, blushing hotly.

This made Meg laugh. He had always said he loved her laugh. Like angels were ringing sweet soprano bells. Her laughter was so like Valerie's.

And then he kissed her, deeply, passionately, pressing his nude body against hers. He was already growing hard; she had touched him before, and there was no embarrassment as she reached down to him again. Though she was admittedly very nervous... But she was allowed nervousness. It was going to be her first time.

She moaned deliciously as he moved down to her sweet little breasts, nibbling and suckling expertly. He knew what she liked. They had done all of this before. One set of hands stroked him languidly as the other carasssed his neck, his shoulders, his face. Ran her fingers through his hair.

With care, he slipped a finger inside her as he continued to lavish attention on her brests. This, too, wasn't exactly new territory but it was a road less travelled. She felt him caressig the small bumps lining her vaginal wall, and she groaned. He had learned previously from a friend, since he had no experience with anyone else, that these features were Megami-exclusive. He likened them to the human female clitoris (though Meg had one of those too) and loved to play with them.

He was dripping expectantly as he finally brought himself back up to Meg's face, laying her on her back and covereing her body with his.

"Are you ready, Meggy?" he whispered.

Kissing him, she replied, "As I'll ever be."

It was so wonderful. He entered her so gingerly, so sweetly, exhaling so slowly, his eyes closing as he buried himself to the hilt inside her. She took his face in two hands, kissing him on the temple as encouragement to continue. He retreated. Another thrust. Another. He began breathing heavily as Megami began to moan, her high-pitched cries driving him wild.

She arched her hips, meeting his next thrust.

"NNNNGGGGGHHHHH--" he cried, quickly pulling back. Meg's eyes shot open as she felt him pulling helplessly, trying with all his might to remove himself from her and failing miserably.

"David?? DAVID!!"

Tear were trickling from his eyes as he finally extricated himself from her, falling back against the headboard and looking down. Meg got to her knees and realized what had happened.

His rapidly deflating manhood was covered in blood. Something inside her had punctured him numerous times.

"Oh my God... Oh my God, David..."

Steadying her with one hand,he inspected himself with the other. "Ouch," he finally stated wiping the tears from his face. "Owie. Ow."

Megami began to sob. "I'm sorry, David! I never thought... I didn't think... Oh my god! I didn't know!"

Looking seriously into her eyes, David said quietly, "It's okay, Megami. Don't worry about it, okay? It's not as bad as it looks. It just stings like a bitch."

His penis was already bruising horribly. Covering her mouth in horror, her crying intensified.

"Meg! Don't cry, baby! Don't cry. I'll survive. I will." Embracing her firmly and kissing her on the cheek, he said, "I wasnt using my brain. Well-- not the one in my head, anyway. I should have been more careful. It's no big deal. We'll try again some other time..."

There would be no other time. For anything.

David gave the doctor come lame fib about slipping while shaving his pubic hair. The doctor obviously didn't believe it but didn't ask questions. David thought, in the end, that it was hilarious. He laughed sheepishly as he told her. She did not find it amusing at all.

At the end of that conversation, she told him their relationship was over.

For six months now, he continued to send her mesages. Some friendly, some a little short-tempered, some full of sexually explicit speech. He tried everything, but to no avail. He just didn't understand that Meg wasn't human and never would be. They could never have children or a normal sex life. It was pointless to even try, so she cut him loose. Nirvana was small but it was becoming larger every day. Eventually he would find someone new. She was sure of it.

And she knew that if she didn't leave Nirvana soon, she would die. She didn't belong among humans.

But Papaw, Gaz, and Valerie were all against her. And why? Because they didn't want her to find out the truth...

Megami felt stupid for not figuring it out EARLIER.

She didn't belong among humans. Now less than ever.
