A Girl's Troubles
Chapter 2

The first few weeks were hell. Katara swore that she would never get used to living with three men. She realized how filthy men could be. Most of the time the apartment was trashed; pop cans and beer cans were everywhere. Piles of dirty clothes that desperately needed to be washed and God knows what was hiding under the furniture. Every time Katara had to get somewhere, she’d always trip over something. She probably was the only person, who kept their room picked up, though she didn’t dare to go in any of the guys’ rooms. She was afraid something might attack her.

It was two weeks before classes started and Katara made sure she had everything. The week before she went to the main office to have her schedule put in and she walked through the campus buildings so she wouldn’t get lost on the first day. She was usually the only one home, Haru and Jet were always gone, and Zuko was in his room constantly reading or studying something. Katara wasn’t sure if he did that for fun or because he had to. She had only been there a month and already had each of their personalities down. Haru was the kinda of guy you would find at church, Jet was a pervert and Zuko…well he didn’t do or say much. Katara never really talked to Zuko that much, but always caught him looking at her; then again, she caught Haru and Jet looking at her too. ‘Maybe moving in with them was a bad idea.” She thought staring up at the ceiling in her room, “But it’s my only option.” She had to make this work, if not she’d be on the street, homeless. She didn’t want to think about it.

“So bored!” Katara groaned. She had absolutely nothing to do. She couldn’t go out, because she might get lost, but it was so boring inside. “I could always clean,” she thought to herself. “But do I really want to clean that mess up? It’d eat me alive.” She laid on her back for a couple more minutes, contemplating on what she would do, when she heard the familiar sound of the front door. Katara sat up then walked out of her room.

“She so wants me.”

“Really, and grabbing her behind and asking for her number is going to make her want you?”

“Who says behind? It’s called an ass.”

“Why do you have to swear so much?”

“Cuss I can, you gotta problem with it?”

“Swearing is vulgar.”

“Shut up Haru. You’re so gay.”

“Why do you keep calling me gay?”

“Cus you are.”

“I am not.”

“Yeah just keep telling yourself that.”

Katara couldn’t help but laugh. Jet and Haru were always fighting with each other. It was quite a spectacle to watch. They’d throw insults at each other until they got tired of it. Katara knew it was harmless arguing, since they never rose their voices or threw punches.

“So where have you guys been all day?” She asked grabbing a cup from the top cabinet and filling it with water from the tap in the sink.

“I was at the book store for a book drive when Jet came in. He started harassing one of the girls that worked there.” Haru began

“Figures.” Katara answered sipping her water.

“Then he asked her on a date. She said no. He grabbed her behind. She smacked him. Then he asked for her number. Then she smacked him again.”

“How rude can someone get?” Katara asked. She was sorry that she missed it all. She would have pissed herself from laughing so hard.

“I had to drag him out of the store, or that girl would of had him arrested.” Haru added.

She couldn’t help but laugh. That thought of Jet being arrested was pretty funny. Katara didn’t like him very much, he was rude and thought women were playthings. It upset her when he treated her like a possession instead of a person. She’d like smack him good, if she got the chance.

“Too bad I missed it all.” Katara said, just then the phone rang, “I’ll get it.” She said. She grabbed the receiver off the charger.

“Hello?” She asked.

“Hello?”

“Who is this?”

“Sokka, is Katara there?”

“Hi! Oh yeah, this is me!” Katara said. It had been so long since she heard a familiar voice.

“Oh, so is everything ok?” He asked

“Yeah.” Katara answered

“You settled in ok?” Sokka asked, he had to make sure she was ok.

“Yup.” She answered

“So how do you like in Omashu?”

“Oh, it’s wonderful! It’s so warm here. And they have grass!”

“So unfair! I’m stuck here in the artic and you get enjoy summer heat.” Sokka said glumly, “Anyways when do you start school?”

“In two weeks.”

“You nervous?”

“Yes! I don’t know anyone here.” Katara answered

“Hey you know me dontcha?” Jet asked

“Who was that?” Sokka asked

Katara threw a mean look at Jet.

“My roommate.” She answered

“Oh, how are you two getting along?” Sokka asked

“Well, actually I have three roommates.” Katara answered

“Three? In one dorm room?” Sokka asked

“We live in an apartment.” Katara answered back

“Ok? I couldn’t imagine living with three girls.” Sokka stated

“Uh, about that…”

“What?” Sokka asked, he knew it was something not good

“Um, I kinda live with three guys.” Katara answered sheepishly

“Three guys! How are you living with three guys!? You can’t do that! He shouted, Katara had to hold the phone away from her ear.

“Do you want me to explain it?” She asked

“Fine, explain.”

“Well, when I got here, all the dorm rooms were full. Then I met Haru, and he said I could room with him. So I took him up on his offer.”

“And how do you know if it’s safe living with them?”

“Well nothing has happened to me yet.”

“Yet, that’s the key word. What are you gonna do when something happens?”

“I can handle myself Sokka.”

“I know that, well I have to go.”

“Don’t tell Mom and Dad, they’ll freak. Bye”

“I won’t, bye.”

Katara set the phone down, ending her conversation with her brother.

“So who was that? Your boyfriend?” Jet asked smirking.

She could have thrown up. “No! That’s gross.”

“Then who was he?”

“He’s my brother, sicko!” She would’ve smacked him but decided not to. ‘Waste of energy.’ She thought to herself. Katara walked back to her room, she had enough of Jet and his stupid remarks. She flopped down on the bed. ‘Well, Sokka knows that I’m living with three guys. Mom and Dad are not going to be happy about that. Would he really tell them? I hope not.’ Katara knew her parents would not approve of her situation. ‘Come on Katara, you are nineteen, you can handle yourself.’ But she couldn’t help but think what her parents would do if they found out. ‘They can’t ground me; I don’t live with them any more. I know Dad would come up and get me or something like that.’ She hadn’t even started school yet and already she was stressing out. ‘Well there’s nothing I can do about it now.’
