Repression and Repercussions
Chapter 12
As Jane drew near to Daria’s house she frowned in puzzlement at seeing Stacy Rowe sitting on the stoop, looking ready to cry. She didn’t know what was wrong, but for some reason she thought that maybe Daria had a hand in it. Walking up she kept quiet so as to not startle the poor girl.
Sitting next to Stacy, Jane waited for the younger girl to offer up something, but she just kept staring onto the sidewalk before her, so finally Jane asked, “Hey Stacy, what’s up?”
Blinking her eyes Stacy turned to look at Jane for a moment before looking away. “I don’t know Jane, I was supposed to meet Daria at her place today and she hasn’t answered the door yet, and I’ve been waiting for a full ten minutes now, and I don’t know if I offended her last time that she won’t talk to me, or maybe she just forgot about it and went on with her life...”
Jane held up her hand trying to get Stacy to slow down, which caused the younger girl to curl away and whimper. Taking a deep breath Jane steadied herself to not ask about the cringing and instead get to the heart of the matter. “Stacy, she’s in the shower. She has probably not heard you yet. However, I have a key and shall let you in. I’ll even throw in not telling the Fashion Club about you wanting to see her so badly for no extra charge.”
“I... thank you Jane... I know I can get carried away...” Stacy answered once she had calmed down slightly.
“Don’t worry about it,” Jane replied as she stood up. “I don’t know why you hang out with them. They can’t be good for you.”
“Well... you know, Quinn is a good person, and Tiffany needs someone to keep Sandi off of her...” Stacy said quietly as the pair walked into Daria’s house.
“And Sandi?” Jane asked while sitting down on the sofa.
“She... she wasn’t always mean... she used to be really nice to me,” Stacy answered while looking down, “But... that changed one summer... I made a major mistake and she has hated me for it ever since.”
“What’s that?”
“You fell in love with her, didn’t you Stacy?” Daria said from the steps dryly.
“Y... yes...” Stacy admitted softly causing Daria to nod silently while Jane’s jaw hang open in surprise.
Daria watched Stacy for a few minutes before looking down the hall towards her room. “Both of you come up here, we have a lot to talk about.”
Leading the two girls to her room, Daria couldn’t help but feel this was a pivotal moment in Stacy’s life, and Jane might help her keep her own problems in control long enough to help Stacy out. Taking a spot on her bed she indicated for the girls to sit wherever they wanted. “Jane, if you don’t mind waiting on our talk... I did promise to help Stacy before you called.”
“That’s fine Amiga... do you mind if we sit like we did last time? I...” Jane started before being cut off by Daria pointing to the bed next to her. Taking it for the invitation it was, she curled up into Daria who hugged her in a maternal way, before studying Stacy.
“You had something to tell someone Stacy,” Daria started after a moment. “Can you tell me who it was?”
Stacy looked at Daria and Jane silently for a few minutes before lowering her eyes and whispering softly, “You.”
