Our Present to the Future
EPILOGUE
When they returned home, they were all standing in Ghost Command in the same spots they’d been in when they’d left that morning. They were all very quiet and solemn at first. Finally, they all shared a number of group hugs.
Neil and the kids came downstairs and looked at them all in puzzlement, but their elders knew that they could never tell them about what had happened. So they made up an excuse, saying it was time for the New York residents to leave and they were just saying good-bye. That was enough to appease the kids, but Neil looked skeptical.
“Whatever,” he said, deciding that this must just be one of those things that his predecessors felt they needed to keep from him.
The NYC Ghostbusters went home by return flight that day. When they got there and saw the Slimer of their time, they couldn’t help but grin at him, knowing how important he would be to the future of their business. Janine welled up again, but she blinked her tears away so that none of the kids would worry.
Slimer asked them how the mission went, in much the same way the future Prof. Slimer had asked Jake. Egon smiled at him and said it went perfectly.
Peter patted him on the head and said, “It was the most important thing that we’ve ever done and I, for one, will always be proud to know that I was a part of it.” Peter thought of all the time he’d given the spud hell and added, “Always remember that, Slimer. This mission was our most shining moment, and if we had to go through all those embarrassing experiences that were brought up on the camping trip to make it possible, then it was all worth it in the end.”
They all refused to tell Slimer what happened in any more detail than that, so he eventually got bored with asking and raided Janine’s desk looking for candy.
But he would never forget Peter’s words.
THE END . . . AND THE BEGINNING . . .
Author’s Notes (cont’d): See? Character death wasn’t so bad! *g* And as promised, I didn’t do a Star Trek: Generations (resurrect them all in the future just to kill them off later), although it did have a bit of a preachy Matrix: Revolutions feel to it. Hope you didn’t mind!
