Back Home Again
After our whole “half-breed” conversation had reached its end, we decided to get back on the bed. We were both silent as we thought about everything that had happened in the short amount of time that we had been awake. Even though it had been only about a few hours, it felt as though it had been a long tiresome day. I couldn’t believe how much things had changed in the short time between now and last night. Suddenly, Dib’s voice shook me from my thoughts. “So, what now?” he asked, gently stroking my stomach. “What do you mean?” I asked back. “I mean, with you being pregnant and all. I mean, we can’t just stay in school and stuff. Some nosy teacher is bound to ask you sooner or later why your belly is so huge, and then they’re gonna go call my dad.” “Why?” I asked. “Besides, I don’t even have a baby bump yet.” “I meant when you DO get the baby bump.” “Oh. But why would they call your dad?” Dib looked at me like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Because by now everybody in the whole freaking school knows we’re dating, teachers included. It’s gonna be kinda obvious, don’t you think?” I had to admit that I hadn’t thought about this. “I guess you’re right, but we could just make something up, right?” Dib laughed mirthlessly. “Yeah, we’re gonna tell em you ate a whole bunch of burgers and got really fat in the abdominal area.” he said sarcastically. “Ew,” I said. “What?” he asked. “I hate burgers. I find them to be incredibly icky.” He looked at me strangely for a moment, then said, ”Okay fine, whipped cream.” “Okay, that works.” We laid there for a few more minutes, before I decided I should go home. So I wiggled my way out of his gentle embrace and got up off the bed. As expected, he wanted to know where I was going. “Where ya going?” he asked. “Home,” I replied. “Ria will probably wanna know about this.” “Well, okay. But I get to walk you there.” I smiled.
When we got back to my house, Dib and I kissed goodbye, and I went inside. Immediately, Ria came running. “Hey, you’re back!” she exclaimed. I smiled. “Yeah, I guess I am.” “Hey, are you okay?” she asked. “I mean, you just don’t seem yourself.” I sighed. I knew she was going to freak. “Listen, Ria... I don’t know how you’re gonna take this, so I’m just gonna lay it all out.” She looked at me wide-eyed and expecting, as if she expected me to give her the most wonderful news since the news of the birth of the baby Jesus. (I wasn’t really sure who Jesus was, but I had heard a lot about him.) I took a deep breath and said, “Last night, me and Dib sort of...y’know...did it, and now I’m... pregnant.” As I predicted, she completely flipped. “Oh. My. God. Are you fucking serious!?! Oh my God... I’m gonna be a godmother!” She seemed completely ecstatic. “I DO get to be the godmother, right?” I smiled wearily. “Yes Ria, you can be the godmother.” “Yay!” she squealed. “Ria, I’m worried.” Her face, which had only seconds before been all happy and whatnot, now looked slightly sad and confused. “Why?” she asked. I hesitated, and then continued. “Well, I mean, what if I’m not ready to be a mother and stuff? What if I can’t give it what it needs?” She smiled. “Oh Luna, of course you’ll be a good mother! If any smeet is gonna have a good mom, it’s gonna be yours.” I grinned. Ria always had known the sort of things to say to make me feel better. “Thanks, Ria.” She smiled. “Hey, I’m just telling the truth. If I didn’t think you’d make a good mom, I wouldn’t be telling you that you would.” Man, was making people feel better her talent or something? “Again Ria, thanks.”
