Chapter One - The Ancients.

Lola sat quietly in her mother’s study reading a recent report from the leader of the Brotherhood of the Blade about the White guard of the Ancients. As far as was known they had been disbanded and they were left with a warning from the Necromancer’s Shadow Prince not to reform them or face destruction. She looked at the gray feathered drake.

“Are you sure they have disbanded their White Cloaks, Duke?”

Duke locked his eye on her. “They better have. I lost my family to them and they swore with a combined blessing that they would not reform them.”

 Another duck whispered in his ear. “Brother, we should leave here soon. It is a risk for us to be here.”

“Blade, we’ll leave soon and by the same entrance we entered from,” Duke stated, as he glanced at the gray feathered female that stood by his side. “If you or your people get any hint of their return, let me know immediately.”

“I will let you know, immediately, Duke, you have my word bond on it,” Lola stated the look in her eyes putting Duke’s nerves at ease. The white guard was as much as a Suscan problem as it was to the Necromancers’.

He stood up, nodded his head to her and within a matter of seconds they were gone and the sounds of padded feet were heard before silence rang over the hallway.

Her mother came into the room with her school bag in hand. “School is going to start soon. You better hurry,”

“Thanks mom, I’ll see you tonight,” Lola said, as she kissed her mom on the cheek and rushed out the door towards the Keltor Middle School.

In the shadows, Blade looked to Duke. "I don't see why you gave that information to a Suscan child instead of her mother."

Duke smirked knowingly. "Giving it to her means any other party who is against the white guard will be informed. With her mother, it would only be Suscans."

Running down the streets to school, it didn’t take her long before she met up with her friends Canard, Kaladan and Wildwing at the school gate. A flash of something caught her attention in an alley across from the school, She could have sworn she saw something long and white in the alley.

“What got your attention, Lola?” asked a voice from her right.

She turned to look at Canard and smiled. “Sorry, I got distracted by something.” She glanced back to the alley and saw nothing. She assumed the long white thing was a bag that was floating around as she turned her attention to her friends and headed into school.

She took her normal seat by the window and whenever possible she would glance out to see if what she had seen before would be visible again. The whole morning showed her nothing as lunch came and then after lunch recess.

It was recess, when Lola’s feathers on the back of her neck started to tingle something bad was coming and she knew she had to figure it out when another student came racing past them yelling about something about people wearing white cloaks before the student dashed off to alert more students.

Lola growled silently as she pushed herself off the fence. She knew what they were. The Ancients white guard, they have been reformed. She had to get word to the Necromancers’ Shadow to send an envoy to the Supreme Ancient to confirm or deny that they have reformed the White Guard after they had been disbanded so many decades ago.

"This is not good if it is them."

"What do you mean, Lola?" Canard asked.

"Nothing good ever comes from people in white cloaks."

Kala stepped off the swing as she went to Canard and Wing’s side as they headed towards the school building to see what the white cloaks were. Lola had gone before them as she had to confirm it before she did anything. All she could do was hope that her father had sent her cousin to see her as she could get him to get word to Duke about the White Cloaks, if it was them. It was when she reached the front of the building, she saw the three White Cloaks standing there talking with the principle, and one of them was constantly waving his hand at the principle. She knew what they were doing – using their mental powers to get the weak minded principle to do what they wanted him to do as he turned to his vice principle and started to yell for all the drakes to come line up in front of the school.

Lola was fuming, the White Guards had returned and she knew she had to protect her friends by getting them away from the schoolyard before the White Cloaks saw them. She started to nudge them away, stating, “We should get out of here now. They’re not good.”

Kala looked at her. “Why?”

“White Cloaks have a bad, nasty history with my people and the other magic group in the area,” Lola replied, as she tried to keep them out of the principle and vice principle’s eyesight so Canard and Wing would not be summoned to line up. “We all need to sneak away.”

But then, a loud voice came from where the vice principle was as he approached them. “Canard Thunderbeak and Wildwing Flashblade, you two better line up.”

Damn! thought Lola, as she turned her head to look at the vice principle. “You are being controlled, you should know.” she said as she snapped her fingers in front of him casting a mental dispel.

He looked at her like she said something crazy. He turned his eyes on Canard and Wing. “Go line up, now!” and then paused a moment of clarity in his eyes and silently mouthed the word hide to Canard and Wing but took Kala to make a show of the only stray student he had found was a girl.

Lola dragged Wing and Canard away as she dragged them through the back of the fence and told them to head for home as she followed them. She knew she would need to use the Thunderbeak’s house phone to get her cousin to come to the house, she knew he could find the ones she needed to get there.

The vice principle took her to the lined up where one of the White Guard was getting the students to recite a spell. One of the other two turned to him. "Did you find the other two who are on the list?"

"They’re sick today, all I could find was this young girl who is one of the drake’s twin sister and neighbor to the other. She confirmed that they’re both at home with the flu."

The White Cloak looked at Kala as if she were nothing more then dirty ice. "Very well, we have no use for hens."

Kala looked around a bit confused that the vice principle had taken her and lied to the White Cloaks about her brother and Wing, though she was sure Lola had done something. She listened to the spell, though was not happy that none of the drakes were able to do it before walking off in the opposite direction of the bullies. She needed to find Wing, Canard and Lola.

Needless to state, the school bullies who had bullied Kala for most of her time at school since the Thunderbeaks arrived in Keltor failed to pass the test. They knew everyone would be too busy to stop them from chasing the poor little rich hen about. She heard the sounds of the bullies saying their chant that they would do before they start chasing her and since she couldn’t find where her brother, Wing or Lola was at, she turned to face the bullies, this time, she was not going to let them bully her no more. The bullies caught up to her and started to tease her like they always do.

“You better run, idiots, as I’ll make you regret it if you don’t,” Kala replied, as she raised her hands up as she started to do the chant.

The leader of the bullies stepped forth and right as he was about to open his bill, flames erupted from her hands sending flames at him and beyond to the other two bullies.

The screams of pain came from the three drakes as they went racing off trying to get the flames off of their faces and bodies.

The White Cloaks turned to see the three students rushing past, as the hen that they had dismissed so casually was standing there with flames erupting out of her hands. The leader of the three White Cloaks turned to the principle. “Who is that hen?”

"Kaladan Thunderbeak," the principle said before the vice principle could stop him.

One of the White Cloaks swore as he waved his hand in front of the principle, "I think you have a very dangerous hen, she should be expelled since she is a danger to your students."

The principle turned to look at Kala after the White Guard got her to drop the spell. “Kaladan Rosebud Thunderbeak, you are hereby expelled from Keltor Middle School.”

The minute she heard the word expelled, the other students started to laugh at her and started to yell ‘you’re expelled rich girl!’, the teasing and the shock of being expelled, sent her running out of the school grounds and down the street towards home.

It was only five blocks away, when she caught up to Canard, Wing and Lola. Wing and Canard stopped her with worried looks. "What happened, Kala?"

"I.. I.. I used the spell... to keep .. those ...bullies away.... but.... then ...I was expelled."

"They can't just do that!" Canard said his anger starting to rise.

Lola put a hand on his shoulder to calm him. "Did they get your name Kala?" Kala nodded still in tears. "Then it is for the best, but be careful, those white cloaks may try to come after you before your mom can make arrangements to send you to a school that can teach you."

”What do you mean teach her, Lola?” asked Canard, as they headed for home as fast as they could.

"Your school is not setup to teach students with magic, but there are schools that are."

“But . . . .” Kala said, she glanced to see their block and home.

Canard looked at his sister. “We better go into the house and tell mother what happened at school.” He turned his head to only moan out. “Dang it, the White Cloaks are here.”

Lola sighed. "I'm going to deal with them, they’re trespassing on my mother’s turf."

Canard, Wing and Kala followed Lola to where Odella was standing at, the same White Cloak was waving his hand towards Odella, who was shaking her head as if she was trying to dispel something from her mind.

Kala snapped, “Get away from my mother!”

Odella’s head shaking stopped as Odella yelled to Kala, Canard and Wing to get behind her. “I am not going to let you try your bloody mind games on me, White Guard!”

The White Guard stepped back, other than Doves and Suscans - no one had ever shaken their mind control spells. Odella took advantage of the moment of shock to put on her gloves. She had never thought that she'd have to use it in combat after settling down, alchemy was good for getting things done around the house. But her training had originally been in combat for the ship she served on in space. Using the gloves as her conductor made the snow into a clear ice shield.

Lola grinned from behind the White Guard her Dove dagger in hand, which she normally had well concealed. "Run away now, you will not be warned again."

The White Guard who stood next to the middle Guard turned and swore as he whispered loudly, “Dove!”

“Yes and no, but you are hereby ordered to run away or feel my wrath,” Lola hissed, as she took her combat stance behind them.

The three White Guards looked at the Dove and the alchemist who had an ice shield up. They had no choice but to leave, but then, the middle White Cloak saw Nosedive coming. He waved his hand towards him. “Come here, boy,”

Nosedive glanced at him, smirked and dashed into the house yelling for his mother.

The White Guards swore as it meant more witnesses.

“For trying to use your mind tricks on one of my friends will earn you no mercy from me now,” Lola snapped, as she lunged at the three White Guards with her two daggers flashing their deadly bite.

Another battle cry came from their right as Wildwing saw his mother come lunging out of their home with a sword in hand as she assisted Lola in slaying the three White Guards. But as soon, as Tarisn finished one off, went in front of the ice shield with her sword held ready for anymore White Guards if they appeared.

Wing looked at his mother. “Mom, how did you get a sword?”

Tarisn glanced at her son. “I’ll tell you when this is over, Wing.” Tarisn turned to look at the last of the White Guards, who lay dying in front of their homes. “Weren’t they disbanded?”

Lola turned to look at Tarisn after wiping her daggers clean on the White Cloaks’ cloaks. “They should but I see that they are back.”

They heard the sounds of a vehicle approaching, Tarisn sheathed her sword as she watched as it came to a stop by her home. A purple haired, chestnut feathered male Raptrin emerged from the vehicle. Tarisn shook her head and spoke in a dialect unknown to her children, “You were stupid to allow Lola to be on her own facing the White Guards, Rowain. If I was your mother, you would be on my knee being spanked.”

Rowain gave her a cold look, despite only being a few years older then Lola, if you did not know him you would have though him an adult. "I'd have been here sooner if she had told me, all I had to go on was an alert that her Dove weapons had been drawn."

Dive grinned goofily at Rowain. "Don't worry about mom, she worries because she cares." he said using the same language causing Wing and Tarisn to look at him odd for different reasons.

“Well, I don’t as I know her all that well,” Rowain replied, as he turned his attention to the dead White Guards. “So what brings them back and to this location which got you, Tarisn and Odella with your weapons out, Lola?”

Lola not wanting to scare Kala, Wing, or Canard any more then they were went back to the language they could understand. "Kala has a talent for magic. They were trying to take her away and attempted to control Nosedive. I did warn them under Suscan regulation, they have no right to take what already belongs to another. Both Tarisn and Odella are mother's property, and father has an invested interest in Tarisn’s family."

Rowain listened to Lola carefully, under Suscan interest Lola was not to use Dove weapons, though in this case both Dove and Suscan interests were evident. The White Guard was a Dove enemy and they targeted a Dove line. This would be enough to satisfy his uncle without letting on to the parts that involved Catherine. "I don't think you will get into trouble for this Lola, but try not to mix interests like this again. Do it your father’s way or your mother’s way, you can not mix both forever."

“I understand, but I need to get Kala away from here as I know the White Guards will come for her if the others went to the school to learn that they came here,” Lola stated.

“Then, you should take her to the Necromancers since they are closer tied to the magic guilds,” Rowain looked at the mess that she created. “I’ll clean this mess up for you,”

“You always end up cleaning up my messes, Rowain,” Lola replied, as she sheathed her daggers and headed towards Odella, Canard and Kala. “Odella, we need to get Kala out of here. They will send more White Guards.”

Odella nodded. “I understand, she’ll be better off in the magic user guild. Make sure that they get her there,”

"I give you my word," Lola turned to Kala who was trying to hide. "Go pack up some clothes and a few things you want to take with you. It's not safe here for you, Kala."

Kala turned to look at her mom. “Mom, I’m safe here.”

Odella looked at her daughter. “Kala, it isn’t safe anymore. The White Guard will figure out that you are here and a magical duck. You need to go with Lola,”

"I want to stay here."

"Kala, you need to go with her. I don't want you to become a victim of the White Guard. You will come home again but only when you have the power and skill to send them away without help."

Rowain noticed that the young girl was not going to listen to her mother. “Listen to me, Kala. You are not safe here . . . the White Guards will kill your entire family and your friends to get to you. They will claim that you killed them instead of them. They are this manipulative with their attempts at getting a drake to be sent to them.”

"But that is not right," Kala protested.

"You’re right, it's not right and we will do something about it, but to do that we can not worry about protecting you too."

Kala turned to look at her mom and twin brother. “Who will protect my mom and twin brother?”

Lola looked at her. “Kala, worry not about them. I will protect them, I give you my word bond that they will be protected from them.”

Rowain snapped off. “Lola!” He knew she could not protect them if she’s hunting them on a different part of the planet.

Lola just smiled at Rowain. "Catherine will not let anything happen to them, they will be protected."

Rowain grumbled as he turned his attention towards Kala. “What is your decision, stay and risk your family’s death or be safe in a different location?”

Kala knew that Lola had given her, her word bond and she had heard from Lola’s own bill that when one of her people promises and says I give you my word bond, that they would die if they fail to follow through with it. “I have only one thing to get from my room.” And she rushed off into her family home.

Rowain let go of the breath he held as he glanced at the remains. “When she gets out here, Lola, take off towards their area. They’ll accept her and move her to another safe house.”

Lola nodded as she turned to see Kala coming from her home with a backpack on her back. “Ready?”

“Yes,” Kala replied, as Lola started to move away from the homes.

Kala followed her at a run, before they got too far away, she stopped and glanced back to see her mom and brother waving good-bye to her. She waved bye before following Lola into the alleys and then to other busy streets. Kala knew they were getting further and further away from her home and she knew this was going to change her life for a long time to come.

Lola raced into an alley as she looked at the markings on it. She looked at Kala. “Wait here, I need to send a summons to someone,”

Kala nodded as she watched the people walk past like nothing was wrong in their lives. She knew her life was now changed but it meant her family’s survival if she didn’t remain with them.

It was not long of a wait till a couple from the looks of them entered the alley. "Greetings, is there a reason for a Suscan to summon us in private like this?"

"There is, the first matter is that the White Guard is back, the second is this young hen. Her name is Kaladan Thunderbeak and the White Guard nearly got their hands on her."

The couple turned their attention to Kala. “The pillar of Virtue here? The Shadow will want to know and see her. We will take her in and keep her safe.”

"I don't know what you are talking about."

The hen of the pair smiled gently and kneeled down to be able to look Kala in the eyes. "It's alright, a long time ago there was a hen named Kaladan Thunderbeak who founded our order along with Zahra Thunderbeak and Tyriel Wraith."

The drake nodded. "It is our hope that one day these three will be reborn and unify magic on this world."

“So she may be the one you are hoping for?” Lola asked.

“She may be the one but it is unknown till the Shadow Prince meets with her.” The hen stated, as she stood up. “But we will keep her protected and send out an envoy if our Shadow Prince wants to confirm it.”

The drake replied. “I’ve already confirmed it in her memories, Kaladan showed me images of the White Guard and we need to move if we are to keep her safe,”

Lola nodded. “I will be alerting the Blade’s leader since he has reasons to hate them,”

The pair nodded as they started to move away from her with Kala deeper into the shadows before they went racing towards the Necromancer areas.

~~~~~~~~~~
Lola ran back to her family home knowing that Kala was in safe hands. She didn’t expect to see Dive sitting on her family’s step when she got there. “Dive, aren’t you supposed to be with your brother and mother?”
Dive glanced away before he looked at her. “Is she safe?”
“Yes, she’s safe. How is your family handling all this?” Lola asked.
Dive chuckled. “Learning that your mother could handle a sword like that and that your best friend’s mother had magic, Wing and Canard are coping.”
~~~~~~~~~~

Kala looked around in awe as they entered the Necromancers area of town. It was different from the area she had lived in. all the houses were made of stone instead of metal and looked very well kept. There were also large green houses behind them, which looked like they could feed the house and three others. The streets wee clear of ice so skates could not be used on them. They had passed a park that was a large enclosed green house full of plants Kala had never seen before. When they reached the temple, she was struck with awe at the giant green house that spanned a few city blocks. They took her inside and Kala went to touch one of the three to see if it was real.

The hen chuckled. "This is the outer temple garden. The temple is in the center."

“Are we going there?” Kala asked, as she looked back at her.

"Yes, it's the safest place I can think of, you can use one of the guest bedrooms till you decide if you want to stay here to learn or train in a guild." she said as they led Kala to the temple.

There was a drake standing on the steps, his grey feathers seemed to glow in the light, though when he turned to look at them Kala wanted to hide from his red glowing eye. "Kate, Gaspard, how are things going in the area?" the stranger asked.

"I'd like to say its all good, but there is trouble brewing. The White Guards have been reformed and seem to have taken an interest in young hens now. This duckling was one of their first targets that we know of, if it were not for a Suscan girl running interference, who knows what those drakes would have done."

The stranger looked at Kala. “What is your name, young one?”

“Kala . . . Kaladan Thunderbeak,” Kala replied.

He patted her on the head. "You're in good hands kiddo, I pray your family is safe."

"What's your name sir? Are you hiding from the White Cloaks too?" Kala asked.

"I'm Duke, and yes when I was little I had no choice but to hid from them. They took my eye and killed my family. Now I fight to make sure others don't suffer the same fate."

Kala nodded. "The ones that came after my family were killed, Lola would never let harm come to them." Kala said with a smile. She had been uncertain about leaving but the one eyed drake had confirmed Lola's fears about her safety and her family's.

"Take care kiddo, the Necromancers are good people so don't make them worry." he said as he walked in the opposite direction contemplating what his next move would be. The White Guard was not what he had come to the temple to hear about, but it needed to be dealt with.

Kala turned to look at the woman who walked with her. “Is there a place I can train my magic? So I could return home and if they dare come for me, I can slay them before they do me harm?”

"The best place would be the guild, though it is very far away."

Kala thought about it and looked at her. “How far away would it be?”

“Kaladan, it is in space deep space. Farther than our own galaxy is. But they will train you to be your best.” The woman replied. She smiled. “Even I trained there with my magic when I wanted to get advanced knowledge.”

"Can the White Cloaks go there?"

Kate shook her head. "They can not, the guild would turn them away."

”More like they would blast the White Cloaks away, if they dared,” The drake said, as he smiled at her. “Besides, they never leave this planet ever. They think that we’re the only ones who have any brains.”

Kala looked at them both. “Then, I want to go to this magic guild. If they are ones who refuses to let them in, then I’ll be there.”

The man looked at the woman. “What ship should take her there? Seabird or another Suscan ship?”

“Hands down, Seabird, my cousin is one of their employees, under Lady Kelsa, she will not take Kaladan somewhere else and sell her off. She’s the most trustworthy of any fleet commanders around.” The woman replied.

”Then, we should find out when they are going to dock in Keltor again and take her there the minute the shuttle arrives.” He said.

Kala looked at the two not sure what they were going on about this time and yawned, it had been a long day and she could use some sleep. "Where is that guest room, I'm kind of sleepy."

The woman turned to look at her and her look softened. “I’m so sorry, I should have escorted you to the guest room. You must be exhausted by what happened this day,” Kala nodded as she walked with the woman to the guest rooms and opened a door and allowed her to step in. The woman spoke up, “I’ll bring some towels so you can get washed up later after you had some sleep.”

Kala thanked her and went to the bed, pulled the covers off and removed her boots from her feet and slid into bed. It was not long after that her exhaustion made her fall asleep.

~~~~~~~~
A few days had past since her arrival, Kala had enjoyed wandering around the temple. Kate and Gaspard had both been very kind. Lola had come by the temple to let them know when the next Seabird ship would be in port and to give Kala the papers she would need to travel.
Kala locked eyes on Lola. “Please make sure that my family and Wing’s are safe till I return. When I return, I will be able to protect them from the White Guards.”
“By that time, Kala, I’m sure that they’ll be disbanded and this time for good.” Lola replied. “This I swear to you.”
"What are you going to do?"
"That will depend on who they make the mistake of making enemies with."
“Like the one eye drake who was here when I first arrived, he didn’t like the information he learned here,” Kala asked.
Lola nodded. "I know. He came to see me the same day, good thing I had the report done. He's a Shadow Guild Master but not the type who can mobilize a fighting force that can decimate them. The Necromancers managed to take down the White Guard once, but their ruling line was murdered after that and they've never been able to mobilize like they did since then."
”He’s out there, but he’s not ready to appear yet.” Kala stated, as her eyes got that distant look to them.
“What do you mean by that?” Lola asked.
Kala smiled. “The Shadow Prince of the Necromancers will return but it will take time for him to return. It may not be of that ruling line but it will be his reincarnation.”
The drake who was watching them looked at Kala. “Do you know the name of our Shadow Prince’s reincarnated?”
Kala shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I do not see what his name will be.”
"I guess we will find out when the time comes,"
“And if the Ancients do try to bring them back after the second removal will find the Shadow Prince will do them some major damage.” The woman replied.
“The previous Shadow Prince did it by the book legally, but the one who will come, might be worse than what the previous one did.”
That earned her a grin from the drake. "I'm looking forward to it,"
Kala was a bit confused by the comment as the drake walked away. "What does he mean he's looking forward to it?"" she asked Lola.
Lola chuckled. "The White Guard belongs to the Ancients who use unbalanced magic. If they are wiped out there will be no more imbalance and the Necromancers and resume being regular mages. Their temples are open to anyone, including non magic users as is the priesthood inside the temple."
“Meaning?” asked Kala.
"Meaning the Ancients play at being the good guys but they are really the bad guys."
“Hopefully, they will get what is coming to them.” Kala replied. She looked at the sky. “So when is the shuttle coming?”
"Two days from now, your registration is already submitted, and my mother has taken care of your tuition on the condition that you are to mate Tarisn's eldest son. Which I don't think you will mind."
Kala blushed. “How did she find out that I like Wing?”
"She didn't, it's actually politics. In space, Flashblade is a very respectable name. But space is matriarchal so who ever Wing marries needs to be strong and well educated. Since your mom worked for mine as did Wing’s, she thought it best that you and Wing be matched and that is why she is funding your guild education." Lola smirked. "Just between you and me, my mom is still fighting with my dad over who I should be matched to. Mom has her heart set on Canard, dad thinks I'd be best with someone of higher standing."
“Well, considering Canard is a Thunderbeak, I don’t see any problems as in him being matched to you.” Kala replied, with a smile on her bill. “He likes you a lot.”
"I know, I like him too but then there is politics."
“And your dad doesn’t think Canard is politically connected and high ranking to be your support system like Wing will be for me, when I get older and start dropping ducklings?”
"Of course not, in his opinion I should be matched to a powerful lord or a prince from another empire."
"But wouldn't that be the case if you were a princess and not just a merchant."
"My mom is a fleet commander, of the Seabird trade fleet, the largest merchant fleets in space. My dad rules one of the strongest nations in space."
“I guess, Canard would have to get his own fleet and make it huge to get a chance with you to be his mate.” Kala smiled.
"It's still up in the air, right now what makes him mom’s choice is that he and I are compatible. So far none of dad’s choices have been."
Kala nodded. “Maybe one day, you will have him by your side as a mate and a support system.”
Lola smiled as she glanced at her watch. “I need to head back. They will escort you to the shuttle when it comes, Kala. Till then, remain close to them, do not venture away from them.”
Kala nodded. "See you, Lola!"
Lola smiled, as she quickly hurried away. She hoped that Kala would get to the shuttle and to space without encountering any White Guards.
~~~~~~~~

Two days later, Kate and Gaspard came to Kala’s side as she was sitting in the temple with one of the temple ladies, trying to learn one of the songs that they sang to honor the Morningstar with, with thirteen Necromancers. Kate looked at her and the temple woman. They both bowed to each other as the woman stood up and walked away. Kate turned her attention on Kala. “The day and time for your shuttle has arrived. We will escort you to the shuttle.”

“Why do we need several guards, why not a few guards?” Kala asked as she counted thirteen drakes and hens behind Kate.

“It is to make sure we deliver you to the shuttle safely,” spoke one of the Necromancers as he knelt in front of her. He locked eyes on her for a moment before standing. Kate noticed the look in his features and she nodded towards Kala. “We need to leave now for the shuttle.”

Kate nodded. “We better go now. The sooner we get her to them, the better.”

They all headed for Keltor’s space port with Kala in the middle of the group, hidden from view with all the red cloaks that surrounded her. They hoped that they would get her there without encountering anyone.

The next chapter is coming.
