Birthday Wishes

Summary: Nazz is setting up Kevin's 18th surprise birthday. So why does she need the help of Eddy?

Nazz placed the cake upon the kitchen counter with a little more force than needed. She was getting a little frustrated, Eddy was supposed to be here and help. It was Kevin's 18th birthday today and the cul-de-sac was throwing him a surprise party. Her parents were going to be gone for a few days, so she throwing the party at her place. She convinced Eddy to group everyone together and get them here, especially Double D. She chuckled to herself, 'Sure it's supposed to be party, but why not give him his birthday wish.' It has been obvious to Nazz that Kevin has an enormous infatuation for Double D for about two years. Tired of watching her friend not doing anything about it, she went to Eddy. She was afraid that the schemer would use it against Kevin, but Eddy relieved that fear by telling Nazz that Double D had it for Kevin just as bad. It took them a few hours for coming up with an idea to get the two together. Just as this thought crossed her mind the doorbell rang through out her house. She opened and glared at a grinning Eddy, obviously trying to get out of being late.
"Where the hell have you been, Kevin is going to be here in less than an hour!"
"Well hey, you try rounding up every one, and the includes getting Double D out of his 'cleaning mode'."
"...you're still late."
Eddy sighed there was no way to get out of any trouble with Nazz. He muttered a 'sorry', and got brought all the guests in Nazz's house. Rolf came in, placed his gift down, and started to ramble about the traditions of his homeland. Sarah came in with Jimmy (hand in hand as always), and pretended to listen to Rolf. All the guests started to come in, Jonny started talking to Ed about some school of architecture and no one could tell if he was listening or not. Nazz came in stood next to Eddy.
"I just got off the phone with Kevin, he's going to be here in half an hour." She looked around the room. "Um, Eddy?"
Eddy looked at her sweetly, "Yes?"
"You were late because you had to get Double D out of 'cleaning mode', am I correct?", she asked in sweet voice.
Eddy looked at her, he was a little puzzled by this, "Yeah. Didn't we establish that not that long ago?"
Nazz turned to Eddy with scornful look upon her face, "Then where the hell is he?!"
Eddy looked around and cursed before he muttered a 'be back in a sec'. He walked out of Nazz's house and down the cul-de-sac to Double D's place. He walked through the unlocked door and searched through out the house, he was sure that he was still cleaning. He walked through the house a second time, he checked the kitchen, the living room, and Edd's bedroom. Just as he was about to search the house a third time, he saw a small bit of light coming out of the bathroom. He knocked and was answered with a quiet 'go away'. He tried to open the door but found that it was locked.
Eddy let out a slight frustrated sigh, "Double D, open the door."
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Double D open this door," Eddy said sternly.
"No! Now go away and leave me alone," Edd said softly.
"Double D, open this damned door before I break it down." He stood back as he heard the clicking of the lock. He walked in and found Double D sitting against the wall holding his knees to his body. He squatted next to him with his back against the closed door. "Why aren't you at Nazz's place, Kevin's going to be there in about twenty-"
"I'm not going."
Eddy looked at his best friend, who was looking blankly at the tiled wall. "Why not?"
Double D sighed and rested his head on his knees, "I just can't."
"Can or won't?"
"Both."
"Double D...," he waited for the teen to look up, "come on, everyone is going to be there."
"Correction Eddy, everyone except me. I'm not going, and that's final. Now just...just leave me be."
Eddy looked at Double D seriously, "Listen, I know you don't want to go because you're 'in love with Kevin' and all that-"
"Exactly, so why bother him on his birthday. The last thing he needs is for some twerp to bother him."
"Shit, 'D!" Eddy took a breath to calm down. "Let me finish. You're not going to be a bother to Kevin, I promise. You're right, it's his birthday and everyone is going to be there, yada yada, but how do you think he's going to feel to see not everyone is there. D' come on, please."
"Fine."
Eddy was a little surprise, "Fine? Just like that?"
Double D nodded.
"No spasms to get ready?"
He shook his head.
"No shower?"
He shook his head again.
Eddy gave Double D a mischievous grin, "You were ready this whole time weren't you?"
Double D didn't give an answer, he just blushed.
The two walked out of the house, after Edd grabbed his gift to Kevin of course, and were on their way to Nazz's place. Nazz greeted Double D, with a 'hi' and a sisterly peck on the cheek, and then he walked over the the table and placed his gifts among the others. He was about to walk over and say hello to Ed, but Nazz ran into the living room, telling everyone to hide. The lights went out and everyone was quiet, except for the occasional excited giggle from Jimmy. Nazz answered the door, and as soon as the door was shut the lights were one and everyone popped up.
"Aw, this is so cliche`d, you shouldn't have," Kevin said with a huge grin on his face.
Nazz walked over and punched him lightly, "Happy Birthday smartass."
"Thanks you guys, but, uh, where the hell is the music, come on. What's a party without?" Kevin walked past Nazz and over to her boom-box and played some random song loudly. "Now the party has started." Kevin started dancing, and Double D watched and followed every swing of the hips. He watched as Kevin's red hair moved slightly with his movements. Double D's only realized the music stop when Kevin did and his lips held a pout towards Nazz for cutting his music short.
"Nazz, what did you do that for?," Kevin asked.
Nazz shot him a sweet look, "How about opening presents first?"
A smile quickly plastered itself on Kevin's face, "Hell yeah!"
Kevin walked over with Nazz toward the table with all of his presents. Nazz handed them to Kevin one by one, this way she could make sure that Kevin would get Double D's last.
Kevin examined the long gift, "Let's see, from Sarah and Jimmy.....A new air pump, thanks you guys."
Nazz kept on handing him his gifts as Kevin quickly unwrapped them. Rolf gave him a sweater made of cow hair, Jonny gave him a large bird house, Ed gave him new boots, and Eddy gave him a new basketball. Nazz handed the last gift, D's gift, to Kevin.
"Whoa, this one is pretty heavy. Who is this from?" He looked on the tag and smiled. "From Double D. What did you get me?"
D blushed right on the spot, "W-why don't you just o-open it?"
Kevin unwrapped the gift swiftly and stopped in awe. He ran his fingers over the smooth tool case and opened its clasps. He stood wide eyed as he gazed at the new wrench set. "Double D," he said softly, "oh god...Oh my god D' thank you so much." He threw a soft smile to Double D, and a blushing Double D returned it.
Eddy was a little confused, "Um, Kevin how many wrenches do you need?"
Kevin glared at him, "Dude, these are the top of the line. Real titanium."
Nazz stepped in the middle of the two, "Okay, well that was all the gifts. How about some food now, huh?" Everyone nodded. "Okay then, everyone in the kitchen." Everyone followed Nazz inside, except for Kevin, who pulled Double D aside.
Double D looked at Kevin puzzlingly, "What is it Kevin?
"D', you didn't have to get that for me. I know how much those run and-"
"You're right I didn't have to, but I wanted to. It wasn't a problem Kevin."
Kevin gave Double D a soft, genuine smile, "Thanks, it really means a lot to me. Double D, now that we're a lone, there's something-"
"There you are birthday boy!" Kevin released an annoyed sigh, and looked at Rolf. "Kevin, the candles are glowing and I believe it is your culture to blow them out. Now back in the old country-"
"Alright Rolf, I'm coming." Kevin gave an apologetic look to Double D. "Come on dude."
Double D followed Kevin inside the kitchen. Everyone gathered around Kevin and the cake. Once again Double D caught himself staring at Kevin. All the lights were off and the candle glow was illuminating Kevin's face in an angelic way. Double D couldn't help but feel a little torn as he saw the happiness on Kevin's face, he wanted to be the one that made Kevin that happy. Seeing that his friend was a little upset, Eddy walked over toward his friend, and wrapped his arm around him. Double D gave his friend a small smile, and Eddy replied with a small nod towards the den. Double D followed Eddy in the den, unaware of the jealous look from Kevin.
"You don't look like you're having much fun," Eddy said as soon as they were alone in the den.
Double D shrugged.
"Double D come on, cheer up. He wants you here, man, he loved your present. It was his fave by far."
"It's not whether he wants me here or not, that isn't really it."
Eddy looked at his friend softly, "Then what is it?"
Double D looked at his feet and spoke softly, "It's that he doesn't want me."
Eddy hugged his friend close, "Hey don't start getting upset. Look at me." Double D looked up. "Nazz needs help with getting one of the gifts from the guest room. She can't get it because Kevin will follow her, so can you get it for her?"
Double D nodded, "Where in the room is it?"
Eddy shrugged, "I don't know. Just search around in there." Eddy patted Double D on the back and sent him up to the guest room.
"Hey Eddy?"
Eddy turned around, "Yeah Nazz?"
She gave him a funny look, "Don't you think the birthday bow on the back is just a little too much over the edge?"
Eddy mocked thinking about it, "Nope. Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to follow my part of the plan and I hope you'll do the same" Eddy walked quietly up the stairs.
Nazz walked in the kitchen and announced the music was going on. Once again, everyone piled into the den and danced to the music. Nazz walked up to Kevin and motioned for him to follow her. Kevin gave her a puzzled look and followed her to a quiet corner at the foot of the stairs.
"Kevin I hate to pull you away from your party," Nazz started, "but I need you to go up to the guest room. I left one of your gifts up there." Kevin just replied with a nod and walked upstairs. He walked into the guest room, and as soon as he did a shadowy figure came out and quietly shut the door behind Kevin, then locked it. After a quick check to make sure it was locked, he walked back downstairs. He walked over to the punch bowl and offered a cup to his partner in crime.
"How are you so sure that neither of them are going to leave that room Eddy?," Nazz asked a little unsure. She wanted this plan to work.
Eddy flashed a wide grin, "Because I switched the doorknobs around."
