Then and Now
Chapter One : Then, Part One
Zuko slid down the dusty embankment of the nearly-dry river bed, eyes intent on the other side, where he climbed up soon after and lied still. He peered over the green, soft grass of the landing. As expected, his prey, the child Avatar, was busy with his little friends, gathering wood it seemed. The other, older male, Sokka, bent over to grab a rather useless-looking twig to add to his similar pile, only to be toppled over by the skittering rat-thing Momo, which was carrying a log twice it's size.
"Thank you, Momo." Katara, the female of the group, smiled as the critter dropped the log in the center of what appeared to be a newly-made firepit.
"Yeah, sure, I'm fine, thanks for asking..." Sokka grumbled as he dusted himself off. The young warrior grabbed up his lost twigs, only to get tossed onto his rear by a rather hefty grunt from Aang's flying bison. "Ugh! Appa snot!" Sokka yelled, exasperated.
The teen got to his feet for a second time, wiping himself off with a look of
disgust as said Appa mucus mixed with dirt, leaving mud smeared on his hands and
clothes.
"That's disgusting." Katara said disapprovingly as she peered over Sokka's
shoulder.
"Really?" Sokka deadpanned.
Katara huffed, rather fed up with her brother's bitter mood. The waterbender readjusted her heap of wood and glared at Sokka, who only grunted in return. "Why don't you rinse off in the river, Sokka? You look like you need to cool off."
At the mention of the river, Prince Zuko swiftly moved from his spot on the
bank, creeping around to the edge of the forest. He ducked behind a bush, making sure he could keep an eye on the Avatar and his measley crew. Zuko smirked.
Something inside him tugged as he watched the group.
He remembered so long ago, back when he was barely the age of 5, hiding behind the bushes and spying. He'd supress a giggle as his "prey" would turn her back to him, scratching her head as she searched for the little Prince Zuko.
Soon the little bubbly boy couldn't stand it and he burst into laughter, running out of the shrubbery, into the vast, beautiful courtyard. "Here I am mama!" He would say, stretching his little arms out wide.
"Oh!" The woman would gasp and take him into her warm arms, laughing softly.
"Was that a good spot, Mama?" He asked excitedly.
"Best one yet, son." She smiled softly, lifting little Zuko into her arms.
Zuko snapped out of his daydream. He gritted his teeth and focused, moving aside some of the leaves so he could get a better look at the group.
"'Bout time I was rewarded for all my hard work." Sokka huffed proudly, followed by a loud yelp of pain as a pine-cone collided with his head. The tan boy looked around furiously, only to catch glimpse of Momo skittering up a tree. Defeated, Sokka climbed down the riverbed, rubbing his sore skull.
Zuko held his breath as the other teen passed directly infront of him, murmmuring something about Momo-soup. The prince watched as Sokka uncerimoniously peeled his clothes off his sweaty, filthy body. In one aspect Katara was right, the bright sun beating down on the unforested bits righ by the river made it fairly hot. Even though the group had set up camp under the trees, as Zuko's scout had reported, all that movement in the sun must have been scorching. Especially for two so used to the cold. Zuko smirked and added thatto his mental list of advantages.
Sokka soon stood fully nude at the edge of the water. He tiptoed into the stream and sighed softly at the welcomed coolness, unaware of the spying eyes intently watching him.
